COWBOY CARTER was a major commercial success, but it was not a hit “despite critics”: professional reviewers broadly praised the album. Released March 29, 2024, Beyoncé’s eighth studio album topped major US and UK charts, placed on IFPI’s 2024 global album sales chart and won the 2025 Grammy for Album of the Year.
Was COWBOY CARTER commercially successful?
Yes. Its performance was strong across several measures, but those measures describe different things: a US debut week, UK chart positions and a global annual chart placement.

| US first week | 407,000 equivalent album units | The Associated Press reported the Luminate figure for the album’s first week in 2024. It combines pure sales and on-demand streams; it is not a pure-sales total or a worldwide figure. AP report |
| US charts | No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Billboard country album chart | The album’s No. 1 Billboard 200 debut was Beyoncé’s eighth on that chart, according to the AP’s 2024 report. AP report |
| UK charts | No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart and Official Country Albums Chart | Official Charts called this a “historic, record-breaking Official Chart Double” and described Beyoncé as the first Black artist to reach No. 1 in the UK with a country album. Official Charts Company |
| Global annual chart | No. 18 on IFPI’s 2024 Global Album Sales Chart | IFPI’s chart combines physical sales, downloads and free and paid streaming, translating consumption into chart units according to its methodology. It is not directly comparable to Luminate’s US first-week equivalent album units. IFPI |
Did critics dislike Beyoncé’s country album?
No. Metacritic classifies COWBOY CARTER as receiving “universal acclaim,” based on 22 critic reviews on its current album page. That aggregate does not mean every reviewer loved every song: the page’s excerpts include reservations alongside praise, particularly for the album’s experimentation and its use of country as a starting point rather than a boundary. Metacritic
So the title’s “despite critics” framing gets the contrast wrong. There was a debate around genre and belonging, but the professional-review consensus recorded by Metacritic was strongly positive, not hostile.

Why did the album prompt discussion about country music?
COWBOY CARTER uses country as part of a wider genre-spanning project. Its reception also touched on questions of Black musical history and who is welcomed in country music. Pitchfork places the album in that broader context and discusses Beyoncé’s earlier experience performing country material at the CMAs. Pitchfork
The Associated Press reported that Beyoncé said a prior experience in the genre left her feeling unwelcome, and that this helped prompt the project. That context helps explain the conversation surrounding the album; it does not establish that controversy caused its chart success. Associated Press
