A Bloomberg report published December 23, 2024, estimated spending across both seasons at about $250 million and said Netflix and Tencent payments together were less than half that amount. Riot, however, said the series succeeded by its internal measures and that season two was on track to at least break even.
What the financial-failure claim is based on
Bloomberg’s December 23, 2024 report described Arcane as an unusually large investment for Riot Games, which financed the series rather than licensing the property to a studio to take on production risk. The report attributed an estimated total spend of about $250 million across the two seasons to League of Legends executive producer Paul Bellezza. This is a reported overall figure, not a verified production-only budget or an audited project account. Bloomberg report reproduced in r/arcane.
How much did licensing reportedly bring in?
The report said Netflix paid about $3 million per episode and Tencent paid another $3 million per episode for Chinese rights. It described those combined payments as less than half the reported overall cost. These figures are attributed to Bloomberg’s reporting; they do not disclose every source of revenue or establish the series’ complete financial result. Bloomberg report reproduced in r/arcane.
Why licensing receipts do not settle the question
A gap between reported spending and licensing payments supports the argument that direct distribution deals did not cover the reported investment. But it is not, by itself, a complete profit-and-loss statement. Bloomberg’s report said sources familiar with the production believed Riot lacked a robust recoupment strategy before launch. It also reported that relatively few of the new League of Legends players who signed up stayed, and that the season-one team had insufficient time to prepare themed in-game items and activations. Those points are attributed reporting, not independently confirmed figures for the project’s total return. Bloomberg report reproduced in r/arcane; GameFragger’s December 31, 2024 summary.

What Riot said in response
Riot’s spokesperson disputed a simple failure verdict, saying Arcane was “a success when we look across all our internal measures” and season two was “on track to be at least break-even for us financially.” The spokesperson also framed the series as part of Riot’s longer-term aim to foster player engagement and retention. These statements use different measures: direct series economics on one hand, and internal or longer-term company value on the other. Neither public statement supplies audited project-level accounts. Did Arcane bring new players to League of Legends?
The reporting’s answer is qualified: it said the show generated signups, but relatively few of those new players remained. It did not publish a complete conversion or retention figure, so the available reporting cannot quantify the show’s lasting effect on League of Legends. Bellezza acknowledged that Riot was surprised by season one’s success and said this was “why we probably missed an opportunity to do some in-game activations around it.” The comment points to a missed coordination opportunity, not a measured estimate of revenue lost. What can be concluded from the public information?
The report makes a credible case for a direct-revenue shortfall relative to the reported investment: licensing payments were said to fall well below estimated spending, while the report described challenges with player retention and in-game tie-ins. But the available information does not establish a definitive net loss for Riot or measure the series’ full strategic value. Bloomberg’s reported figures are not audited project accounts, and Riot’s internal measures and long-term outcomes have not been quantified publicly in the cited reporting.
