No. Sphere Entertainment later said the indefinite-ban letter sent to a fan who posted a video of himself smoking during Phish’s April 20, 2024, Sphere concert had been sent inadvertently. The company said the customer was not banned from its properties. The initial notice and the correction tell different parts of the story; the correction is the final reported outcome.
What happened at Phish’s Sphere show?
During Phish’s April 20, 2024, concert at Sphere in Las Vegas, a fan posted a video showing himself taking a bong hit inside the venue. The post’s caption called it the “first bong hit to ever be ripped in the Sphere.” That was the fan’s claim; contemporaneous reporting did not independently establish that it was the first.
In a letter reported as received on June 6, the fan was told he was indefinitely banned from Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, The Beacon Theatre, The Chicago Theatre, Sphere, and other MSG venues. The letter said: “You knowingly violated the guest code of conduct by visibly smoking inside the venue.” That described the reason for the notice, not the eventual outcome.
Why did the ban notice get reversed?
On June 8, 2024, a Sphere Entertainment spokeswoman told Rolling Stone that a personnel change had caused a breakdown in the company’s process and that the letter had been sent inadvertently. She said the customer was not banned from the company’s properties. JamBase reported the same reversal.

The spokeswoman also said that smoking and bringing glassware into the company’s venues remained against policy, in accordance with local laws. Her statement addressed the company’s position in June 2024; it is not a current official policy page, and the available reporting does not establish whether the policy wording or the individual’s access status changed afterward.
Was it really the first bong hit at Sphere?
The only support for “first” in the reported account is the fan’s caption. The available coverage does not verify the claim as a historical record, so it should be understood as the post’s boast rather than an established fact.
