Warner Bros. Discovery announced on March 6, 2024, that Rooster Teeth would shut down after 21 years. Its signature series, Red vs. Blue, did not simply vanish with the studio: its final season was completed and released as the feature-length Red vs. Blue: Restoration. But the shutdown-era reports do not establish who owns the series today or where it is currently available to stream.
Why did Rooster Teeth shut down?
Rooster Teeth general manager Jordan Levin announced the closure on March 6, 2024. He attributed it to changes in digital media, writing: “It’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.” The Los Angeles Times reported Levin’s statement and the shutdown announcement; it is the company’s stated explanation, not an independently established account of every factor behind the decision.
Rooster Teeth began in 2003 and became known for web-native entertainment, including Red vs. Blue. At the time of the announcement, the company was owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Contemporary reports said the company’s catalog and intellectual property were under consideration for possible placement or sale, but that described the process in 2024—not a confirmed present-day rights arrangement. Axios covered the company’s closure and the contemporaneous catalog plans.
What happened to Red vs. Blue?
The series received a finale rather than ending solely because its production studio closed. Red vs. Blue: Restoration was released as a feature-length final installment. The official Rooster Teeth store lists a Blu-ray edition of Restoration and a box set of the first ten seasons; both listings were marked sold out when checked on October 8, 2026. Store stock can change, and those listings do not confirm current streaming availability.

Did Warner Bros. Discovery sell or keep the series?
The available announcements and reports do not establish the current rights holder for Red vs. Blue, whether its rights have since been sold, or what licensing arrangements apply. Warner Bros. Discovery was considering options for Rooster Teeth’s catalog and intellectual property in 2024, but that historical reporting is not proof of the outcome. A product listing in the former studio’s store also does not establish ownership or current distribution rights.

Rooster Teeth’s properties did not all have the same publicly documented outcome. In July 2024, VIZ Media announced that it had acquired RWBY, including rights for future distribution, production, licensing, and consumer products. VIZ said it was exploring new chapters and broader distribution, but its announcement did not confirm a new season. VIZ’s acquisition announcement also described the franchise as having more than 350 million global views across platforms; that figure concerns RWBY, not Rooster Teeth’s total audience.
That announced acquisition is a useful contrast, not a guide to Red vs. Blue’s status. The sources confirming VIZ’s deal concern RWBY; they do not establish that VIZ acquired, distributes, or plans new Red vs. Blue content.
