Goldman Sachs analysts projected that storm-related closures and disruption could reduce Disney’s parks-division earnings by $150 million to $200 million for the quarter; the figure was a forecast, not a confirmed loss.
What Disney announced for Oct. 9 and 10, 2024
Forbes reported that Disney planned to close Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Oct. 9, followed by Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney Springs at 2 p.m. Disney said the parks would likely remain closed through Thursday. Disney also canceled Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, with refunds for ticket holders. Transportation was expected to stop after the park closures; Forbes reported limited taxi service for resort guests. Forbes
Resort-area closures
Forbes reported that Fort Wilderness campground and the villas at Wilderness Lodge and Saratoga Springs were to close from 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday and were likely to remain closed until Sunday. Disney said it was “closely monitoring” Milton’s path and “making adjustments based on the latest weather forecast.” The report attributed those words to Disney, without naming an individual speaker. What the $150 million figure meant
The headline figure was the lower end of a Goldman Sachs forecast, as reported by Forbes on Oct. 8, 2024. Analysts estimated that closures and other disruption could reduce Disney’s parks-division earnings by $150 million to $200 million for the quarter. The same report attributed an approximately 6% attendance decline during the quarter to Goldman Sachs analysts. That, too, was a forecast—not a reported final attendance figure. Earnings and attendance describe different measures, so the percentage should not be read as another estimate of the dollar loss. Forbes

How the forecast compared with Hurricane Irma
Forbes cited a $100 million loss for Disney’s parks segment from Hurricane Irma in 2017 as a historical comparison. That figure was attributed in Forbes’ 2024 reporting; the underlying company filing was not independently verified here. It is a reported past loss, whereas the Milton figures above were forward-looking analyst estimates, so they are not directly equivalent outcomes. Forbes
