The band’s own comments make clear what inspired the songs, but they do not turn every lyric into a documented real-life event.
What the album is
Model is Wallows’ third studio album and its first with John Congleton as producer, a role he also filled for the band’s 2019 debut, Nothing Happens. The 2022 follow-up, Tell Me That It’s Over, was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid. The album’s 12-track count is reported by the Recording Academy in its May 30, 2024 interview with the band.
What the lyrics are actually about
The most direct statement about the songs’ emotional source comes from Dylan Minnette, speaking to Wonderland in May 2024. He said that when he was finishing lyrics in the studio he was freshly in a new relationship and “very much in love,” and that many lyrics grew out of that outlook. In the Recording Academy interview he put it this way:
“I was writing from a very optimistic perspective and outlook and that definitely shines through in the album, I’d say.”

Vinyl Record Rock Indie Music T-Shirt
- Get ready to have lots of fun with this stylish and great looking design.
- This design is unique and wearable peace of art and a wonderful gift.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
That is the writing context the band has described. It is not a song-by-song key. Minnette has said the album feels like the band at its most recognizably itself, quoting him directly: “I think it’s the most Wallows we’ve ever sounded.”
Overt love songs for the first time
The Recording Academy describes Model as the first Wallows record to sing overtly about love. Its example is “Calling After Me.” Minnette also singled out “Only Ecstasy” as a love song he was proud of writing. Taken together, these interviews support describing the album as the band’s most direct love-focused record, not as a diary.

What the interviews do not establish
- That every song documents a literal event or a single relationship.
- Any confirmed real-life identity behind a specific lyric.
- A line-by-line reading of the lyrics from the band.
The available coverage supports broad context and a few named examples. Anything beyond that would be interpretation, so treat the lyrics as the band’s songwriting rather than a confession.
The new sound
The Recording Academy’s May 30, 2024 interview characterizes Model as guitar-driven and describes its palette as guitar hooks, snappy drums and sing-along lyrics. The band’s aim, as summarized in that coverage, is catchy, full melodies that feel both retro and current.

Writing with the tour in mind
Cole Preston said the trio already knew the routing of the Model World Tour while making the record. He said that knowledge did not fundamentally change their approach. What it did shape was the goal: they wanted a record that could hold up as the defining moment of that period. In his words, “understanding that we’re going to have this level of a moment, we’d need to make a record that represents that moment that belongs there.” The tour was a consideration, not the reason each song exists.
Production
Congleton’s return matters for continuity. Working with a producer the band already knows gives the album a clear link to the debut, while the guitar-forward arrangements mark a different direction from the 2022 record.

How it compares with Tell Me That It’s Over
The most useful contrast is the band’s previous album. In a 2022 FLOOD interview, the band described Tell Me That It’s Over as an experiment with electronic and orchestral-grunge sounds, and said it had no single overarching lyrical narrative, even though romantic relationships recur as a subject. They said the songs developed organically with Rechtshaid.
| Point | Tell Me That It’s Over (2022) | Model (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Producer | Ariel Rechtshaid (per FLOOD, 2022) | John Congleton (per Recording Academy, 2024) |
| Sound as described by the band | Experiments with electronic and orchestral-grunge sounds | Guitar-driven, “vintage-meets-contemporary” |
| Lyrical approach as described | Romantic subjects recur, but no single overarching narrative | Overtly about love; Minnette describes an optimistic outlook |
| Album-wide narrative | Stated: none | Not stated |
The comparison is about approach, not quality. It shows that the band moved from arrangement experimentation toward a more guitar-centred record, and that Model is the more openly romantic of the two.
