Spoilers throughout. Nat is the person who physically kills Monsignor Wicks, but Martha designs the scheme. The apparent locked-room murder and Wicks’s “resurrection” are both staged; the final turn comes when Martha confesses to Jud and Blanc chooses not to take the case’s climactic public reveal away from him.
Who killed Monsignor Wicks?
Nat is the physical killer. Martha is the mastermind and conspirator: she devised the plan to stop Wicks from taking the hidden jewel after learning he intended to open the family crypt and leave with the fortune. The distinction matters because Nat’s real stabbing happens after the scene has already been made to look like Wicks was fatally wounded.
How did Nat kill Wicks in the locked room?
The apparent murder is built from two separate moments. On Good Friday, Wicks gives a sermon and retreats to a storage closet near the church stage. Martha has laced his concealed flask with a tranquilizer, causing him to collapse. Nat remotely triggers a small blood squib attached to a red wolf-head prop on Wicks’s vestments. Jud sees what appears to be blood from a fatal attack.
Nat then uses his standing as a doctor to control the scene. He tells Jud not to touch the prop and goes into the closet while Martha’s scream draws attention. He removes the squib-bearing wolf head and uses a second matching wolf head, attached to a knife, to stab Wicks for real. The apparent fatal wound comes first; the actual killing follows under cover of the distraction.

Does Wicks come back to life?
No. The figure who emerges through the Lazarus door is Samson, dressed in similar vestments. Martha expects the staged appearance, along with footage from a motion-triggered camera, to make the congregation believe Wicks has ascended and restore the church’s reputation. Samson had been hidden in the coffin he made for Wicks and was signaled to emerge.
Who kills Samson, and how does Martha’s plan fall apart?
Jud’s unexpected arrival disrupts the plan. Samson knocks Jud unconscious. Nat then kills Samson with a scythe, leaves the weapon with Jud to frame him, and takes Eve’s Apple for himself. Nat’s greed turns the conspiracy against its own participants.

Martha visits Nat to check whether the plan has been carried out. Nat tries to poison her drink with pentobarbital, but she switches their drinks. He dies, and she stages the bodies in the tub. Her scheme to protect the church has become a chain of betrayals and deaths.
Why does Blanc give up his “checkmate” moment?
Blanc has worked out Martha’s role, but he sees that she has poisoned herself and is close to death. He clears the church rather than making the solution a public performance, leaving Jud to hear her confession. Blanc’s choice is compassion, not a new belief in God. Writer-director Rian Johnson said, “I don’t think it’s about him having any kind of spiritual revelation with the universe.”

Martha admits that she kept the jewel’s location secret for decades and confesses her part in the deaths. She also asks forgiveness for what she did to Grace, Wicks’s mother. Jud offers compassion and last rites without excusing her actions. His response fulfills his hope to be a priest who can forgive broken people; as Johnson put it, “All I want is to be a good priest and to bring forgiveness to the broken people in the world.”
What happens to Eve’s Apple?
Eve’s Apple had been hidden inside Prentice after he swallowed it with his last communion. Martha later possesses it, but Jud ultimately conceals it inside the body of Christ on a newly made crucifix for the church. The jewel associated with wealth, temptation, and violence is placed inside a religious symbol and out of ordinary circulation.

What the ending resolves
The mystery’s solution is human, not supernatural: Nat’s concealed stabbing explains Wicks’s death, Samson’s disguise explains the supposed resurrection, and Martha’s confession brings Jud’s story to its moral conclusion. Blanc remains a nonbeliever, but he lets Jud offer the mercy the final scene is about.
