For a simple, static 24/7 YouTube stream, start by evaluating Vultr’s shared-CPU Cloud Compute against your encoder’s measured CPU use and the plan’s outbound bandwidth allowance. Choose dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute if sustained encoding or a complex OBS scene creates CPU pressure and you need more predictable compute resources. Neither category guarantees a particular stream quality or uninterrupted broadcasting: test your actual content, settings, and delivery path before committing.

“VPS” usually means a virtual private server in general. In Vultr’s product lineup, the relevant choice is between shared-CPU Cloud Compute and dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute—not between a VPS and a separate product called “Cloud Compute.”

What is the difference between Vultr VPS and Cloud Compute?

Vultr Cloud Compute is virtual machine hosting. Its standard Cloud Compute plans use shared CPU resources; Optimized Cloud Compute plans provide dedicated CPUs. “VPS” is a broad term for a virtual private server, so a Vultr Cloud Compute instance can itself be described as a VPS. The useful decision is which compute category and plan suit your workload.

Vultr’s standard Cloud Compute options also vary in processor and storage characteristics: its provisioning guide describes standard plans with previous-generation Intel CPUs and regular SSD, High Frequency plans emphasizing higher clock speed and NVMe, and High Performance plans using newer Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe. Availability and pricing depend on location and may change; compare the live options for your chosen region in Vultr’s provisioning guide.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.

Optimized Cloud Compute is split into General Purpose, CPU Optimized, Memory Optimized, and Storage Optimized families. These are dedicated-CPU plans with different resource ratios. A dedicated CPU may help with sustained encoding or complex scenes, but Vultr’s product descriptions do not establish that any specific plan can encode a particular resolution or frame rate.

Shared CPU vs. dedicated CPU: which should you choose?

Decision factor Shared-CPU Cloud Compute Dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute
CPU resources Shared virtual CPU resources; positioned for general applications and workloads. Dedicated virtual CPUs intended to provide more consistent, predictable compute performance.
Likely fit for a YouTube encoder A low-complexity scene or static feed that passes an actual stream test within CPU and transfer limits. Sustained encoding, complex scenes, or measured CPU pressure where more predictable CPU resources matter.
How to select a plan Compare vCPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, tier, region, and current price. Choose General Purpose or a workload-specific CPU, memory, or storage ratio based on the measured bottleneck.
Cost to watch Plan price and included outbound transfer vary; excess transfer may be charged. Compute may cost more at the selected tier; also check transfer allowance and any additional services.
What the product description does not establish A universal instance size for a 24/7 YouTube encoder. A guaranteed resolution, frame rate, or uninterrupted stream.

There is no documented universal minimum Vultr instance size for every resolution, frame rate, codec, and OBS scene. Decide from the actual workload: monitor encoder and CPU behavior during a representative live test, then adjust the plan or output settings if needed.

Can you run OBS on a Vultr VPS?

Yes. Vultr publishes an Ubuntu-and-OBS streaming tutorial and an OBS-based Broadcaster Marketplace guide. The Ubuntu approach requires an instance configured for a graphical desktop and OBS; the precise image, instance, and setup depend on the method you choose. Follow Vultr’s OBS-on-Ubuntu tutorial for its installation and configuration steps, or see its Broadcaster Marketplace guide for that deployment route. Check current availability and requirements before provisioning.

Set YouTube’s encoder correctly

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and codec. For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended reference bitrates:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps

YouTube lists different recommended ranges for AV1 and H.265: 6 Mbps for 720p at either listed frame rate, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not Vultr plan requirements. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating.

  • Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Test the real workload: Include representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube stream health while live. These recommendations guide the encoder and ingest setup; they do not specify the VPS size you need.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. A stream key connects your encoder to the intended YouTube stream; handle it as a credential and do not share it publicly. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming setup and account eligibility in the relevant channel before scheduling a broadcast.

Estimate bandwidth for a 24/7 stream

For a VPS-to-YouTube broadcast, outbound transfer is the important direction. Vultr says inbound transfer is not metered and outbound transfer counts toward the plan’s bandwidth allowance. Its support page documents a $0.01 per GB overage rate for usage above a plan’s included quota; confirm the current allowance and billing policy before estimating your total. See Vultr’s bandwidth FAQ.

A rough monthly transfer estimate is:

bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the month ÷ 8 = megabytes transferred

Then convert megabytes to gigabytes and allow for audio and protocol overhead. For example, a 5 Mbps stream sustained for an assumed 30-day month works out to about 1,620,000 MB before overhead, or roughly 1,620 decimal GB. This is a planning estimate derived from the stated bitrate and duration—not measured usage or a guaranteed bill. Compare the estimate with the selected plan’s current outbound allowance.

Leave network headroom and test the actual delivery path. YouTube advises testing and monitoring because network interruptions can disrupt a broadcast; a VPS uses a different network path from a home connection, but a nominal bandwidth figure alone does not validate stream health. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Provision, test, and operate the stream

  1. Choose a region and compute family. In Vultr’s deployment flow, select a location, CPU category, plan, and image. Compare current vCPU, memory, storage, transfer allowance, and price for the region rather than assuming every plan is available everywhere. Vultr also supports deployment through its Console, API, CLI, or Terraform, with options such as startup scripts, firewall groups, backups, and VPC connectivity described in its provisioning guide.
  2. Install or deploy the encoder. Use the Ubuntu desktop and OBS approach in Vultr’s tutorial, or evaluate the Broadcaster Marketplace option. Confirm that the selected image and region offer the method you intend to use.
  3. Configure a representative YouTube stream. Set the stream key and the protocol, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, rate control, and keyframe interval appropriate to YouTube’s current guidance. Test the actual video, audio, and scene complexity you expect to broadcast.
  4. Measure before scaling up. Watch CPU usage and YouTube stream health during the test. Vultr’s tutorial advises lowering output resolution or upgrading to a plan with more vCPUs if CPU usage is high. Adjust based on the observed bottleneck, not on a universal minimum that Vultr does not publish.
  5. Verify unattended operation and recovery. Disconnect from the remote desktop and confirm the encoder stays active. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or network interruption and restore the stream; the reviewed product guidance does not establish an uptime guarantee or plan-specific SLA.
  6. Plan separately for archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise one complete archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If preserving the full output matters, check YouTube’s current archiving behavior and arrange a separate recording or archive plan. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS reports high CPU use, dropped frames, or unstable encoding: Check the scene workload and encoder settings. Reduce output resolution if appropriate or compare a plan with more vCPUs, then retest with representative content. Vultr’s tutorial specifically recommends reducing output resolution or upgrading to a plan with more vCPUs when CPU usage is high.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast disconnects: Verify the ingest settings, leave network headroom, and test the VPS’s real delivery path. Monitor YouTube’s health indicators rather than relying only on the plan’s nominal bandwidth.
  • The stream stops after closing the remote session: Confirm OBS is still running on the instance. A disconnected desktop session is not the same as a healthy encoder process; establish a way to check and restart it.
  • The bill exceeds the compute price you expected: Compare actual outbound transfer with the plan’s included quota, and check the current overage policy. Streaming continuously can make transfer a material part of the cost.
  • You cannot find the expected image, plan, or Marketplace app: Recheck availability for the selected region and current Vultr catalog. Product inventory and pricing can vary by location and change over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher bitrate mean I need a higher-CPU Vultr instance?

Not necessarily. Bitrate affects network transfer; CPU demand depends on the encoding and scene workload. Measure both during a representative test.

Will YouTube archive one complete 24/7 stream?

YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one complete archive.
