1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no evidence-based universal winner between Vultr Cloud Compute and DigitalOcean for an always-on YouTube stream. The right choice depends on whether your server must encode video or only relay an already encoded feed, the selected plan and region, and—especially—the stream’s outbound data allowance and charges. DigitalOcean explicitly positions CPU-Optimized Droplets for media streaming and documents pooled transfer and overage pricing. Vultr lists streaming use cases and offers a GPU-based OBS Broadcaster app for a particular workflow. Neither provider’s official material establishes a head-to-head performance or reliability winner.
Start with the workload, not the provider
A cloud server can play two very different roles in a YouTube setup:
- Relay an already encoded stream: the video is encoded elsewhere, and the server forwards it to YouTube. The main planning concern is sustained outbound traffic; compute needs depend on the relay software and workload.
- Encode or transcode video: the server processes video before sending it. This can require substantially different CPU or GPU resources, so choose and test a plan against the actual encoding workload rather than assuming a basic VM is sufficient.
Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace app is an OBS-based workflow for managing live streams sent over RTMP, including to YouTube. Its guide names deployment of a Vultr A16 GPU instance as a prerequisite for that app. That requirement applies to the described app workflow; it does not mean every YouTube stream needs a GPU. DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as suitable for media streaming, but that is a vendor workload description, not an independent performance test. See Vultr Broadcaster and DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.
Compare the documented differences
| Factor | DigitalOcean | Vultr |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant offerings in the available official material | Basic, CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, and Memory-Optimized Droplets; CPU-Optimized plans are identified as suitable for media streaming. | Plan-level bandwidth allowances and optimized-compute plans with streaming use cases; a Broadcaster Marketplace app provides an OBS-based workflow. |
| Example plan information | The retrieved pricing page lists a 512 MiB Basic Droplet at $4/month with 500 GiB included transfer, and a 2 GiB Basic Droplet at $12/month with 2,000 GiB. These are examples, not a recommendation or guaranteed current availability. | The retrieved pricing material lists plan-level prices and bandwidth allowances, notes regional price variation, and does not establish a directly comparable selected plan here. |
| Transfer treatment | Outbound transfer is pooled at team level; inbound transfer is free. Additional outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB. Allowance accrues over the billing cycle and unused transfer does not roll over. Documentation was last verified 14 September 2026. | Bandwidth usage is calculated from outbound data transfer; inbound traffic is not metered against bandwidth limits. Documentation was updated 16 December 2025. The comparable selected plan’s overage rate is not established here. |
| GPU streaming workflow | No equivalent app workflow is established in the available material. | The Broadcaster app guide specifies a Vultr A16 GPU instance prerequisite for that particular OBS-based app workflow. |
| Comparative benchmark or reliability verdict | No independent head-to-head streaming benchmark or supported comparative uptime/recovery result is established. | |
DigitalOcean’s listed prices and allowances are retrieved examples; provider pricing and availability can change. Vultr’s exact price and allowance depend on the selected instance and location. Confirm both providers’ current plan, region, billing terms, and any overage charges before deployment. Estimate bandwidth before you choose a plan
For a continuous stream, outbound traffic is driven chiefly by the video bitrate and runtime. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 3 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps, 42 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of stream quality or a cloud provider’s network performance. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate outbound data per day | Approximate outbound data per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB |
| 50 Mbps | 540 GB | 16,200 GB |
These are arithmetic estimates using decimal GB, calculated from bitrate Ă— time; they exclude protocol overhead and any other traffic. Provider allowances may be stated in GiB or TB, so convert units carefully rather than comparing the figures as if they were identical. A 6 Mbps stream running for 30 days already uses about 1.94 TB decimal before overhead, which is close to the 2,000 GiB allowance on the cited DigitalOcean example plan. Your actual traffic and provider accounting may differ.

Apply the estimate to each candidate
- Set the intended output bitrate and runtime. Base the estimate on the stream you will actually send, not just the source file’s resolution.
- Calculate sustained outbound data. Multiply bitrate by continuous runtime, then add reasonable headroom for protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic.
- Match it to the specific plan and region. Check included transfer, how allowance is applied, and whether it is pooled across machines or accounts.
- Calculate the full monthly bill. Include the continuously running compute instance and any applicable overage. DigitalOcean documents its $0.01/GiB overage and team pooling; confirm Vultr’s selected plan’s overage rate and allowance treatment rather than assuming a cost.
When DigitalOcean may fit better
DigitalOcean is a natural candidate if you want a plan family whose vendor explicitly identifies CPU-Optimized Droplets as suitable for media streaming, or if team-level transfer pooling and documented overage pricing help you model costs across Droplets. Its published Basic examples can serve as reference points, but they do not establish which plan is adequate for a particular always-on stream. Size for your actual workload, and verify current prices, limits, and region availability on DigitalOcean’s pricing page. Its bandwidth documentation was last verified 14 September 2026.
When Vultr may fit better
Vultr may suit a setup that matches its available instance options or the OBS-based Broadcaster app workflow. The app’s guide specifies an A16 GPU instance, so treat that as a requirement of that particular path—not as the minimum for relaying a pre-encoded stream. Compare the exact region, instance, included bandwidth, and current billing terms on Vultr’s pricing page. Vultr’s bandwidth documentation, updated 16 December 2025, explains that outbound transfer counts toward bandwidth while inbound traffic does not; the comparable plan’s overage rate is not established here. See Vultr bandwidth billing.

Configure YouTube ingest and test the full path
Whichever cloud provider you use, the VM must deliver an ingest signal YouTube can accept. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts traffic to and through Google’s servers. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Follow the encoder settings that match your format and YouTube’s current guidance at YouTube encoder settings and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Prepare the YouTube live event and ingest credentials. Use the stream key associated with the intended event or persistent stream setup. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in public configuration, logs, or screenshots, and rotate it if it is disclosed.
- Configure the encoder or relay. Use the ingest protocol and video settings appropriate to the stream; when using an encoder, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval within YouTube’s recommendation.
- Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, not just a static screen or silent clip.
- Monitor stream health during operation. Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and the cloud instance’s process, network, and resource use. Test reconnect behavior and any restart automation rather than assuming it will recover correctly.
YouTube’s recommendations describe ingest expectations; they do not guarantee a provider’s sustained network delivery, instance performance, or automatic recovery. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish comparative uptime or recovery behavior.

Make the decision on measured fit, not a blanket winner
- For a relay-only workload, first confirm sustained outbound allowance and total cost at your target bitrate.
- For encoding or transcoding, test the exact workload on the candidate CPU or GPU configuration; vendor use-case descriptions alone are not sizing proof.
- For DigitalOcean, account for its documented team-pooling and $0.01/GiB overage rules.
- For Vultr, verify the selected instance’s current regional allowance and overage terms before committing to a production stream.
- For either service, validate stream health, monitoring, restarts, and reconnect behavior with a representative test.
Or let it run in the cloud
