Verdict: Vultr can host a continuously running YouTube stream, but it is a do-it-yourself cloud-server setup—not a documented guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. Vultr publishes two routes: a managed Broadcaster Marketplace app that calls for an A16 GPU instance, and a self-managed Ubuntu setup using OBS and FFmpeg. Its Ubuntu guide suggests at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth; that is a vendor-recommended baseline, not independent proof of reliability.
What Vultr offers for a 24/7 YouTube stream
Vultr’s documentation describes two distinct ways to run OBS in the cloud and send a stream to YouTube. The first is the One Click Vultr Broadcaster Marketplace app, whose deployment instructions specify an A16 GPU instance. The second is a self-managed Ubuntu server on which you install and configure OBS Studio and FFmpeg. These are different setups; do not treat the Marketplace app as simply another name for the general-purpose server in the Ubuntu guide.
| Approach | What the documentation describes | Main operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcaster Marketplace app | Deploy the One Click Vultr Broadcaster A16 GPU instance, configure OBS through a browser-accessible interface, add YouTube as the destination, and test. | Follow the app’s A16 GPU deployment instructions and upload source files to the server for a file-based 24/7 stream. Vultr Broadcaster guide |
| Self-managed Ubuntu | Provision an Ubuntu server, install OBS Studio and FFmpeg, configure the stream, and run it yourself. | You choose and maintain the server and must monitor CPU use, transfer, and reconnect behavior. Vultr’s OBS guide |
Vultr’s Broadcaster page describes “Unlimited Network Bandwidth” for the offering discussed there. Do not assume that wording applies to every Cloud Compute plan. Confirm the terms for the exact instance and product you intend to deploy.
Is Vultr a practical replacement for a computer at home?
It can move the streaming workload off a home computer: the stream runs on a cloud server, and the Marketplace guide specifically says to upload source files to the server for a 24/7 stream. But a cloud VM does not remove the work of configuring and operating the broadcast. With self-managed Ubuntu, you still install and configure the software, check that the server can handle your chosen output, track data transfer, and respond to failures or changes.

Vultr’s published guides show how to set up these workflows; they do not establish a 24/7 availability guarantee, independently tested stream quality, expected latency, or uptime for a particular configuration. Treat the resource recommendations and operating advice below as Vultr’s guidance—not as test results.
Self-managed Ubuntu: resource baseline and video settings
Start with the server requirements in Vultr’s guide
Vultr’s guide, dated 1 April 2025, suggests an Ubuntu server with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, 80 GB of storage, and 3 TB of bandwidth. This is a suggested baseline for the documented OBS workflow. It does not prove that every scene, codec, frame rate, or workload will run reliably on that configuration.

Choose an OBS bitrate for your output
The following ranges are the example bitrate recommendations published by Vultr in its 2025 OBS guide. They are guidance, not a measurement of what a particular server or stream will sustain.
| Output resolution and frame rate | Vultr-published example bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 852 × 480 at 30 fps | 500–2,000 Kbps |
| 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | 1,500–4,500 Kbps |
| 1280 × 720 at 60 fps | 2,500–6,500 Kbps |
| 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps | 3,000–6,500 Kbps |
| 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps | 4,500–9,500 Kbps |
| 3840 × 2160 at 30 fps | 13,000–34,000 Kbps |
| 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps | 20,000–51,000 Kbps |
Use the range for your intended resolution and frame rate as a starting point, then watch the server’s resource use and the stream’s behavior. Higher bitrate and longer active time mean more outgoing data, so a 24/7 stream can consume substantially more transfer than a short broadcast.

Setup workflow for each Vultr route
Route A: deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace app
- In Vultr, deploy the One Click Vultr Broadcaster instance and follow its instructions to select the A16 GPU configuration. This is the instance type named by the Broadcaster guide.
- Open the browser-accessible OBS implementation and configure the scenes and GPU integration as described by Vultr.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate, add YouTube as the streaming destination, and test the stream before relying on it.
- For a file-based 24/7 broadcast, upload the source media to the server. Vultr’s guide says: “If you plan to run a 24/7 live stream, then, upload your source files to the server.” It describes SFTP and also mentions FTP, SCP, and Rsync as transfer methods.
- Confirm that the stream is live in YouTube and check the server and transfer usage after launch.
Route B: install OBS and FFmpeg on Ubuntu
Vultr’s Ubuntu guide covers installation and configuration of OBS Studio and FFmpeg. At a high level, the operational sequence is:
- Create an Ubuntu server using at least the resources suggested in the guide: 2 vCPUs, 4 GB memory, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth.
- Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg following Vultr’s documented procedure for the server.
- Configure OBS for the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, using the published ranges above as starting guidance.
- In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the stream key and enter the destination and key in OBS. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnection. Vultr recommends a reconnect delay of 3 seconds or less and maximum retries of 1,000 or more.
- Start the stream, confirm the live feed in YouTube, and monitor CPU usage and data transfer while it runs.
What to monitor after going live
CPU and dropped frames
Keep an eye on OBS CPU usage while the stream is active. Vultr warns that utilization above 90% can lead to dropped frames and buffering. If usage is excessive, its guide advises adjusting the resolution or upgrading the server. This is a warning in Vultr’s documentation, not a measured threshold validated across all workloads.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Transfer use and overage exposure
Estimate outgoing transfer from bitrate and broadcast duration, then compare that estimate with the included allowance for the selected plan. A 24/7 stream is active for far longer than a typical live event; multiple viewers do not by themselves multiply the encoder’s outbound stream from the server, but the stream’s continuous bitrate still drives substantial server egress. Vultr’s bandwidth dashboard shows transfer use and overage fees. Check current plan-specific allowances and overage terms before purchase, and track actual usage after launch. Vultr bandwidth documentation
Stream health and recovery
Automatic reconnect settings can help OBS retry after a dropped connection, but retries are not an uptime guarantee. Confirm that the feed returns in YouTube after a test interruption and determine how you will notice and respond if the server, OBS, or the broadcast needs attention.

Cost: why the entry price is not a streaming estimate
When retrieved, Vultr’s Cloud Compute overview showed a starting price of $0.005 per hour for a small configuration with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage. That entry configuration is materially different from the 2-vCPU, 4-GB, 80-GB, 3-TB baseline in Vultr’s OBS guide, so it should not be used to estimate the cost of the documented streaming setup.
The full cost depends on the selected instance, region, included bandwidth, and any overage fees. Vultr’s available pricing and bandwidth terms can change; verify the current figures for the exact product and configuration at purchase time. The retrieved information does not establish a plan-specific monthly total for a continuously running OBS stream.
Vultr or a managed cloud looping service?
Vultr gives you a cloud server on which to run an OBS workflow, with a choice between the documented A16 GPU Marketplace app and self-managed Ubuntu. That can suit operators who want server-level control and are prepared to configure, monitor, and maintain the stream. If your main goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without a computer running at home, a purpose-built service is a different kind of option.
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: it is always on, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
