Your actual transfer depends chiefly on the encoder’s configured bitrate and how long it runs; the bill then depends on the VPS plan’s included transfer, overage terms, region, and sustained-use policy.
Estimate monthly VPS bandwidth from bitrate
For one continuous outbound stream, estimate decimal terabytes over a 30-day month with this formula:
Monthly TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000
A shortcut is to multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 0.000324. This is arithmetic, not a measured result. It assumes a constant bitrate for all 30 days and excludes small transport overhead, restarts, and downtime. These figures are decimal TB; a provider dashboard may instead display tebibytes (TiB), so check its units.

| Configured bitrate | Estimated outbound data per 30 days |
|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | About 1.94 decimal TB |
| 8 Mbps | About 2.59 decimal TB |
| 12 Mbps | About 3.89 decimal TB |
| 17 Mbps | About 5.51 decimal TB |
For a shorter or less-than-continuous run, scale the result by the fraction of the month that the stream is active. For example, a stream active half the time uses approximately half the monthly amount under the same constant-bitrate assumption.
Use the encoder bitrate, not just the resolution
Resolution and frame rate help you select an appropriate encoder setting, but the configured bitrate is what drives this estimate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives these H.264 ranges:

The transfer ranges above are calculated from the bitrate ranges, not quoted bandwidth allowances. YouTube also publishes encoder guidance for AV1 and H.265, whose appropriate settings can differ. Its guidance recommends CBR, RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval above four seconds. Check YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance because platform recommendations may change.
One YouTube output does not multiply with viewers
The estimates cover one VPS-to-destination output. If the VPS sends separate copies to multiple destinations, multiply the estimate by the number of outputs, subject to how the streaming setup transmits them. But for one feed sent from the VPS to YouTube, do not multiply VPS egress by the audience size as if the VPS were delivering video to every viewer. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.”

What determines the VPS bandwidth bill?
There is no universal VPS price per TB. To estimate your bill, compare the plan’s included outbound transfer with your calculated use, then apply the provider’s current overage schedule and billing rules. Confirm these details for the specific plan and data-center region:
- Included monthly transfer, and whether it is assigned per server or across the account.
- Whether the allowance and any overage charges apply to outbound traffic only or to incoming and outgoing traffic.
- The overage rate, billing increments, and how the provider measures data units.
- Whether the advertised port speed is merely a link rate or comes with a stated transfer allowance.
- Any fair-use language, recommended sustained average load, or limits on continuous traffic.
- The server’s base price and region, plus any account-level free-transfer grant.
A 1 Gbps port describes link speed; by itself it does not state the monthly transfer allowance or guarantee unrestricted sustained use. Provider policies may impose additional conditions.

A dated provider comparison is not a universal tariff
DreamHost’s comparison page labels its figures “as of June 2026” and lists outbound transfer beyond specified allowances at $0.09/GB for AWS Lightsail, $0.01/GB for DigitalOcean, $0.01/GB for Vultr, and $0.005/GB for Linode/Akamai. These are provider-published comparison claims in that dated snapshot, not independently verified offers or guaranteed current prices. Its example costs reflect plan allowances and account-level grants, so multiplying all of your total TB by one of those rates may not produce your bill. DreamHost describes its own VPS transfer as unmetered subject to fair use. See DreamHost’s VPS hosting page and verify current terms with the provider before choosing a plan.
Check sustained-use policies as well as transfer limits
A provider can distinguish advertised port speed from permitted sustained load. For example, iShosting’s policy describes plan- and region-dependent recommended average or constant loads and says it may limit bandwidth for continuous abuse or excessive load affecting other customers. That is a provider-specific illustration, not a rule for every VPS host. Read the policy that applies to your chosen plan and region at iShosting’s VPS Service Restrictions.

Calculate a plan’s likely transfer charge
- Set the actual bitrate. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate rather than estimating from resolution alone.
- Estimate total data. Multiply Mbps by 0.000324 for a 30-day continuous run, then adjust for expected operating time.
- Match the provider’s units. Check whether the provider reports decimal TB, TiB, or another unit, and whether its billing rounds usage.
- Apply the allowance and tariff. Subtract only transfer the plan actually includes, accounting for shared or account-level grants and their conditions, then use the provider’s current overage rate and increments.
- Check operational limits. Confirm sustained-use rules, region-specific terms, and whether separate outputs to other platforms add egress.
For example, a constant 12 Mbps output for 30 days comes to about 3.89 decimal TB by the formula. That figure is not the bill: the charge depends on the specific plan’s allowance and applicable terms.
What vendor examples do—and do not—show
PartVPS illustrates the same bitrate-times-time arithmetic with 30-day figures of 2.59 TB at 8 Mbps for 1080p60, 5.18 TB at 16 Mbps for 1440p60, and 11.34 TB at 35 Mbps for 4K60. These are a vendor’s illustration, not a neutral market statistic or a VPS quote. Its suggested bitrates are vendor-presented. See PartVPS’s 24/7 streaming server page.
No market-wide average VPS bandwidth cost is established here. Provider examples and estimates should not be mistaken for an observed typical price; calculate your own transfer and verify the relevant plan terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
