VP9 Codec Explained: What YouTube Creators Need to Know

VP9 is a playback codec to understand, not a requirement for most YouTube uploads. Here’s how it differs from H.264 and when creators should consider it.

No—you generally do not need to upload your YouTube video in VP9. YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video. VP9 matters chiefly on the playback side: YouTube says viewers need a browser or device that supports VP9 to watch new 4K uploads in 4K. Uploading H.264 and YouTube preparing VP9 playback are separate steps.

What VP9 is—and what it is not

VP9 is a video compression codec developed by the WebM Project. A codec describes how video is encoded and decoded; it is not a file container or an export preset. MP4 is a container, while H.264 and VP9 are codecs that can compress video.

That distinction helps explain YouTube’s guidance. Its recommended upload encoding settings name MP4 and H.264 for uploads. Separately, the same page says, “To view new 4K uploads in 4K, use a browser or device that supports VP9.” That is a viewer compatibility note, not a requirement to encode your upload in VP9.

Do you need to export or upload in VP9?

For an ordinary YouTube upload, follow YouTube’s published recommendations: use MP4 with H.264, keep the source frame rate, and choose the upload bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. YouTube describes the listed bitrates as “recommendations for uploads”; they are not VP9 playback bitrates.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For SDR, YouTube lists 35–45 Mbps for 2160p at standard frame rates and 53–68 Mbps at high frame rates. These figures apply to upload encoding guidance, not to the bandwidth YouTube will use when serving a VP9 playback rendition. Consult the current YouTube settings table for other resolutions, frame rates, and HDR guidance.

YouTube’s current help page does not document a creator control or guarantee for forcing a particular playback codec. A VP9 export, resolution upscale, or subscriber count should not be treated as a promise that YouTube will serve VP9. The sensible goal is to upload a clean source using supported settings and let YouTube prepare playback versions.

What VP9 can offer—and its trade-offs

Google describes VP9 as supporting web and mobile video through ultra-high-definition, including 10- and 12-bit encoding and HDR. Google’s VP9 overview says VP9 “can reduce video bit rates by as much as 50% compared with other known codecs.” “As much as” is important: this is a broad maximum claim, not a guaranteed saving or a promise of equal visual quality for every source, encoder, or playback situation.

Encoding choices depend on the job. Resolution and frame rate, footage detail and motion, the need for a single file or an adaptive set of renditions, target playback devices, desired quality, and encoding time all matter. Larger frame sizes can improve displayed detail, but they require more bandwidth to deliver and more processing power to decode.

The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a current independent benchmark that compares VP9 with H.264 across the range of creator content. Avoid assuming that VP9 is always better, that it will cut your file size by a fixed percentage, or that every device will decode it equally well.

When a direct VP9 encode makes sense

A direct VP9 encode is worth considering when you have a specific need to produce VP9 files—for example, a distribution or adaptive-streaming workflow that calls for that codec. For a normal YouTube upload, the platform’s general recommendation remains MP4/H.264, so creating a VP9 file adds an encoding decision without establishing that YouTube will serve that exact codec to viewers.

Google’s VP9 encoding recommendations are scoped to file-based, on-demand encoding for broad web and mobile distribution. They are technical starting points, not YouTube upload rules or a live-stream recipe. Google suggests constrained-quality (CQ) encoding with bitrate bounds for VOD; its examples include CQ 31 at 1080p and CQ 24 at 1440p. Its broader web/mobile recommendations describe a two-pass workflow and 240 frames between keyframes. Apply those settings only with their stated VOD context, then assess the result against your own footage and time constraints.

For command examples and more detail on file-based encoding, consult Google’s VP9 documentation. That guidance does not cover every content type, live encoding scenario, device, or network condition.

How to choose a workflow

  • Standard YouTube video: Export MP4/H.264, match the source frame rate, and use YouTube’s upload bitrate guidance for the resolution and frame rate.
  • A particular VP9 delivery requirement: Encode a VP9 file only if the destination or adaptive-streaming workflow specifically benefits from or requires it. Validate the output on representative devices.
  • Live streaming: Do not copy file-based VP9 VOD settings into a live encoder. The guidance cited above is not a live-streaming recipe.
  • Mixed device audiences: Consider playback support and decoding capability as well as bitrate and visual quality; higher frame sizes can demand more from the network and device.

Historical YouTube context

Google’s April 6, 2015 engineering blog post described YouTube’s decision to encode videos in VP9 and reported that viewers had watched more than 25 billion hours of VP9 video in the preceding year. That is a historical, company-reported figure, not a current viewing total. The post’s bandwidth comparison is likewise a statement from 2015, not a present-day independent benchmark.

A separate Google announcement about live-streaming enhancements discussed live transcoding and VP9/DASH ingestion at that time. Treat it as historical platform context, not current setup instructions or evidence that creators should use VP9 for today’s YouTube live streams.

Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running

If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings or a playlist live on YouTube around the clock, that is a separate problem from choosing VP9 for a normal upload. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to remain on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud: nothing has to stay on at home, any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
