If your vMix playlist is silent on YouTube Live, first check whether its input meter moves in vMix. A silent meter points to playback, media, or mute state; a moving meter means the audio reaches vMix, so check the input’s audio bus and the mix selected for streaming. Use Solo to hear the input locally, but remember that Solo does not prove it is part of the stream mix.
Find where the audio disappears
vMix’s List Input can combine video, audio, and M3U playlist files into one input. Confirm the intended list is loaded and playing before changing stream settings. The vMix training page describes List Input playback of these file types; it was checked October 3, 2026, and gives no publication date. vMix: Using the List Input.
- In vMix, open the Audio Mixer and play the playlist input.
- Watch the meter for that input. If it does not move, confirm the right list and files are loaded, playback is active, and the input is not muted.
- If the meter moves, the audio is reaching the input. Continue to the monitoring and routing checks below.

Use Solo to check local audio
Solo the playlist input and listen through vMix’s headphone monitor. If you hear it, that confirms the input can be heard locally. Solo is a preview and does not affect the Master mix, so it does not establish that the stream is receiving the signal. Keep checking the routing even when Solo sounds correct.

Check the playlist’s state and automatic mixing
Check that the playlist input is enabled in the mix you intend to use and that its audio is not muted. The master M and mute/speaker controls affect routing; seeing a video in Preview or Output does not guarantee that its audio is in the stream.
vMix’s Automatically Mix Audio behavior can switch active audio to match the active video input. If playlist audio should continue while a different visual is active, inspect the Follow/Automatically Mix Audio control and ensure the playlist remains enabled in the desired mix. Match the audio bus to the stream mix
In the Audio Mixer, verify that the playlist is enabled on the intended bus. New inputs go to Master by default. Master is the default mix sent to streaming; if your production uses an auxiliary bus, make sure the playlist is routed to a bus included in the stream mix, or route its audio appropriately.
- In the Audio Mixer, check the playlist’s enabled bus or buses.
- Open Streaming Quality Settings and inspect the Channels selection.
- Choose a streaming mix that includes the playlist’s bus. If you expect the default Master mix, confirm the playlist is enabled on Master.
vMix’s vMix 29 documentation states: “M is the Master or Default audio mix and is sent to Recording, Streaming and External Output.” See Audio Mixer and Output Audio Channels. Labels and available options can differ by version.

Test the outgoing stream before going public
Once the input and stream mix are correct, make a short test using the same playlist type and audio/video behavior you plan to broadcast. Listen to the actual YouTube output and inspect stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Only after confirming the audio reaches the stream output should you investigate encoder audio settings. YouTube’s current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio codecs and recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate for stereo audio. These are encoder settings, not a remedy for a playlist routed to the wrong vMix bus. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (checked October 3, 2026).

Check YouTube for copyright notices
If the playlist meter moves and the selected stream mix includes its audio, check YouTube Live Control Room or YouTube Studio for warnings or restrictions. YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and lead to interruption or termination if the content remains. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Do not try to bypass detection; use content you have the rights to stream and resolve notices through the relevant rights process. A separate vMix support article addresses low, muted, or distorted audio on Facebook/YouTube streams when the vMix recording sounds fine or playback is weak on a single-speaker mobile device. In that specific scenario, balanced microphone signals connected to an unbalanced computer input can cancel when summed. vMix suggests using a computer audio interface that supports XLR, or temporarily adjusting Separate Mono.

This is a conditional microphone-connection issue, not an established fix for a silent playlist or a wrong stream-bus selection. Do not buy audio hardware for playlist silence without first identifying the matching hardware symptom. The vMix Knowledge Base page was last updated March 16, 2023: Facebook / YouTube Stream Audio very low, muted or missing.
