First, identify which direction the video is travelling. If VLC is playing a YouTube video or live stream, YouTube’s encoder bitrate settings do not control the bitrate VLC receives. If you are sending a broadcast to YouTube, those encoder settings do matter. For playback trouble, compare VLC with a browser and check connection stability before changing encoding settings.
Are you watching in VLC or broadcasting to YouTube?
These are different problems, even though both can be described as a dropping stream bitrate.
- Watching in VLC: VLC receives a stream delivered by YouTube. The broadcaster’s encoder settings affect what is sent to YouTube, but they do not set the bitrate VLC receives as a viewer. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch.
- Broadcasting to YouTube: An encoder sends video to YouTube. In this case, check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s recommendations and monitor stream health.
If you need version-specific VLC menu instructions, first note your VLC version and operating system. Menu labels and behavior can vary, and a direct YouTube link may behave differently across VLC versions.
If VLC is playing the stream
Compare playback in a browser
- Open the same YouTube video or live stream in a browser on the same device and network.
- Compare whether the browser also stutters, pauses, or changes quality.
- If both VLC and the browser have trouble, investigate connection stability and network congestion before changing encoder settings.
- If the browser plays smoothly but VLC does not, focus on VLC-specific playback or how the YouTube source is being opened. The available evidence does not establish a universal, version-specific fix for YouTube links in VLC.
A bitrate or quality change by itself does not identify the cause. It could reflect Wi-Fi or internet instability, congestion, the rendition YouTube delivers, or VLC playback behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the connection, not just its headline speed
YouTube Help recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming on a computer. That is a general recommendation, not a diagnosis of your connection, a guarantee of a particular quality level, or a target bitrate for a broadcaster’s encoder. A connection can have adequate measured speed yet still experience interruptions or congestion.
- Retest on a stable connection; if practical, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection.
- Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection heavily while the stream plays.
- Use the same stream and device for comparisons so that you change one condition at a time.
Try VLC network caching only if playback stutters
VLC’s network cache is a buffering control, not a bandwidth control. Increasing it can make playback wait longer before starting or resuming, while giving the player more room to absorb short variations in delivery. It cannot increase your internet speed or force YouTube to send a higher bitrate.

A third-party VLC network-stream guide gives 3000–5000 ms as an example range for live streams. Treat that only as a cautious trial, not an official VideoLAN recommendation or a universal fix. If you can locate the network-caching control in your VLC version, increase it modestly, replay the same stream, and compare startup delay and stuttering. If the result gets worse or makes seeking inconvenient, restore the previous value.
If you are sending a live stream to YouTube
Use YouTube’s current “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing before the event, and monitoring stream health while live. It also recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Those are broadcaster-side checks; they do not set the bitrate a VLC viewer receives.

Examples of YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations
| Output format | Recommended bitrate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | H.264 stream sent by a broadcaster to YouTube |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | H.264 stream sent by a broadcaster to YouTube |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | H.264 stream sent by a broadcaster to YouTube |
These are examples from YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations, not viewer download-speed targets. Choose the recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate you are sending; do not raise the output bitrate blindly if your upload connection cannot sustain it.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| VLC and browser both stutter or change quality | Check connection stability and congestion; compare on a stable or wired connection before altering encoding settings. |
| Browser is smooth, VLC is not | Investigate VLC playback and source-link handling. Confirm VLC version and operating system before relying on menu-specific advice. |
| Playback is choppy but eventually recovers | Consider a cautious increase to VLC network caching, then retest. Expect a possible increase in startup or seek delay; do not expect more bandwidth. |
| Your outgoing YouTube broadcast has poor stream health | Check the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendations; use CBR, test in advance, and monitor stream health. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is that a prerecorded video needs to keep running as a YouTube live stream, rather than VLC playback dropping quality, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video; it does not broadcast a camera feed, and it does not fix VLC playback or a viewer’s connection.
