VLC Playlist vs. OBS Media Source for a YouTube Live Showroom Loop

For one repeating showroom video, use OBS Media Source with Loop enabled. For multiple videos, use VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled.

For one showroom video that should repeat, use OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For a sequence of videos, use VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed; match its 64-bit or 32-bit version to OBS.

Choose the source that matches your playback

Showroom playback need OBS source Setting to use
One video repeating continuously Media Source Enable Loop.
Several videos in a fixed sequence VLC Video Source Add the files to the playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
Several videos in randomized order VLC Video Source Enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist.

These settings establish what each source is designed to play; they do not establish which will use fewer system resources or run more reliably over a long session. OBS documentation does not provide a comparative long-session reliability, CPU/GPU-use, or failure-rate test. If those factors are important, test the intended files and computer before the showroom broadcast.

How to loop one video with OBS Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the showroom stream.
  2. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
  3. Name the source, then choose whether to create a new source or add an existing one.
  4. In the Media Source properties, select the local video file.
  5. Enable Loop so OBS restarts the file when playback reaches the end.
  6. Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its position and size suit the showroom layout. Use the OBS preview to check the composed scene.

Media Source supports media formats listed by OBS including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Its other properties include restarting playback when the source becomes active, hardware decoding when available, hiding the source when playback ends, closing the file when inactive, playback speed, and YUV color range. Choose those options according to the scene behavior you need; the essential setting for repeating a single file is Loop.

How to loop a playlist with VLC Video Source

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select the scene for the showroom stream.
  3. In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
  4. In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
  5. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the sequence after the final item.
  6. For randomized playback, also enable Shuffle Playlist.
  7. Check the source in the OBS preview, including its visibility and audio, before starting the live stream.

VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries and is intended for playlists. Its Visibility Behaviour controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible. The source also documents controls for network caching and audio and subtitle tracks. These are separate from looping: set them only as needed for the media and scene.

Check the complete OBS scene, not just the loop

A source’s repeat setting only controls local playback. OBS scenes and source ordering determine the final composition and which elements appear above others, so review the preview for overlays, framing, and any other content before going live.

  • Verify the video plays from beginning to end and restarts as intended.
  • Listen to the source audio and confirm that any intended music or narration is present at an appropriate level.
  • Check that overlays or other sources do not cover important showroom content.
  • For a playlist, confirm that every item is included and that fixed or shuffled order is what you expect.

Meet YouTube Live requirements and monitor the broadcast

YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. Its setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Before the event, check YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before going live and monitoring audio and video quality during the event; see its live-streaming tips.

Use only showroom video and audio that the channel has the rights to stream. YouTube’s Terms of Service require compliance with Community Guidelines and state that providers represent they have the necessary rights to live content, including applicable music licensing rights. A video you own may still include music or other material whose streaming rights need separate confirmation.

Plan for archives on long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording of a long showroom stream, do not rely solely on YouTube’s archive; plan a local backup and verify that it is recording.

Playback changes when the source is hidden

For VLC Video Source, review Visibility Behaviour and choose whether playback should continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. For Media Source, check its options for restarting when active and closing the file when inactive.

The local preview works, but the live output is wrong

Check the OBS scene composition and source ordering, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting. During the stream, monitor both audio and video quality; local playback alone does not confirm what YouTube is receiving.
