Virginia Giuffre, a prominent public accuser of Jeffrey Epstein and an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking, died by suicide in Western Australia at age 41, her family said. Giuffre also publicly accused Prince Andrew, who denied her allegations; their civil case ended in a 2022 settlement without an admission of liability.

Who was Virginia Giuffre?

Giuffre became one of the best-known people to speak publicly about abuse and trafficking connected to Jeffrey Epstein. She described herself as a survivor and brought her allegations into public view, helping make her a prominent voice in discussions of accountability and survivor advocacy. PBS NewsHour’s obituary reported that she founded Speak Out, Act, Reclaim, an organization known as SOAR.

What did Giuffre allege about Prince Andrew, and what was resolved in court?

Giuffre publicly accused Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager after Epstein trafficked her. Andrew categorically denied her allegations. The distinction matters: the civil suit’s settlement did not mean he admitted them.

Issue What the reporting says
Giuffre’s account She alleged that Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17, after Epstein trafficked her. This was her allegation, not a criminal conviction.
Andrew’s response He categorically rejected Giuffre’s allegations.
Settlement The civil suit was settled in 2022 for an undisclosed sum. Andrew did not admit the allegations in the settlement.
Separate court filing In a court filing, Andrew acknowledged Epstein was a sex trafficker and described Giuffre as “an established victim of abuse.” That statement should not be recast as an admission of Giuffre’s specific allegations against him.

These distinctions are reported by the Associated Press. The settlement resolved the civil case; it was not a court finding that Andrew committed the acts Giuffre alleged.

How did Giuffre advocate for survivors?

Giuffre spoke publicly about sexual abuse and trafficking and founded SOAR, short for Speak Out, Act, Reclaim. Her public role joined personal testimony with advocacy for survivors. Her family described her as “a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking” and “the light that lifted so many survivors,” in a statement quoted by the Associated Press.

What is known about her death?

Giuffre’s family announced that she died by suicide in Western Australia at age 41. The family’s statement is the basis for the cause of death reported here; there is no basis in the cited reporting to infer a motive or connect her death to a conspiracy.

The BBC reported that Western Australia police received a report about an unresponsive woman in Neergabby. At the time, police said early indications were that the death was not suspicious, while major-crime detectives investigated. That was a contemporaneous preliminary assessment, not a final finding. BBC News’ report described the investigation as it stood on 26 April 2025.
