The viral story that a Samsung smart fridge displayed an Apple TV+ ad addressed to “Carol” and sent a woman to the hospital was not independently confirmed. Later reporting traced the hospitalization claim to a joke comment beneath an image of the ad. The account presenting itself as the image’s original Reddit poster also said the story was likely fabricated from a comment on that post.
What the viral story claimed
A Reddit post described a woman named Carol who, according to the poster, believed a Pluribus promotion on a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator was directed at her. TechSpot reported the post’s allegation that the woman had schizophrenia and went to a hospital after seeing the message, “We’re sorry we upset you, Carol.” Those sensitive medical details were claims in the post, not an independently verified account of a hospitalization.
The ad promoted Pluribus, an Apple TV+ series. Its appearance on a refrigerator screen gave the story a plausible setting: Samsung had separately been showing advertising on Family Hub cover screens. But the existence of ads on some refrigerator displays does not verify the story about Carol.
How the claim was traced to a joke
TUAW reported on December 21, 2025, that the hospitalization story could be traced to a joke comment posted weeks earlier beneath the same refrigerator image. The publication said it found no independent source confirming the hospitalization. TUAW’s report describes that trail.

In a Reddit thread displaying the ad, an account presenting itself as the image’s original poster said he was an American man, not Carol, and that the hospitalization story was likely fabricated from the third-highest comment on his earlier post. That is a public correction by an account whose identity has not been independently verified; it is not proof of the account holder’s identity. The Reddit thread contains the correction.
Does the ad show that a fridge personalized a message?
No. The available reporting describes the image as a static marketing creative and says the same wording appeared on multiple displays. It offers no evidence that Apple, Samsung, or a refrigerator platform inserted a particular viewer’s name. The name “Carol” in the image is not evidence that the ad identified or targeted a specific person.

The fact-check and the broader question of advertising on connected appliances are separate issues. TechSpot reported that a November 2025 software update allowed owners to turn off cover-screen ads in settings. That is dated guidance, not a guarantee that the same setting or menu path is available on every model or in the current software. Check Samsung’s current support directions for the specific refrigerator before changing settings.
