The best-documented answer is Candace Payne’s “Chewbacca Mom” video, titled “It’s the simple joys in life …” Guinness World Records lists it as the most-viewed Facebook Live video, with more than 159 million views by July 19, 2016. That is a verified Facebook Live record—not proof that it remains the most-viewed video across every Facebook format, including today’s Reels.

| Creator | Candace Payne, later known as “Chewbacca Mom” |

Guinness notes that records can change and that new results are not always published immediately. Therefore, 159 million is a dated, verified milestone rather than a live 2026 counter.
What happens in the “Chewbacca Mom” video?
Payne sits in her parked car after buying a Chewbacca mask at Kohl’s. She puts it on, activates its sound, and hears the character’s familiar roar. Her delighted laughter quickly becomes the clip’s main event. The recording is an unscripted personal moment, not a commercial or a produced comedy sketch. ABC News reported that the mask and Payne’s spontaneous reaction were central to the story.
Why it spread so quickly
An instantly understandable premise
Viewers need almost no explanation: a person tries on a recognizable toy, it makes a funny noise, and she loses herself laughing. The clip delivers its setup and payoff within a short, self-contained narrative.

Timing and amplification
The video appeared while Facebook Live was receiving substantial attention in 2016. News organizations, ordinary users, brands, and Star Wars-related accounts then discussed, embedded, or reposted the moment. Those factors plausibly helped distribution, but the available public evidence does not isolate a single cause or provide a complete platform-by-platform attribution of the views.
Is it the most-viewed video on Facebook?
Only with a qualification. The Guinness category is specifically most-viewed Facebook Live video. Facebook has not provided a transparent, continuously updated public leaderboard covering every upload, Reel, advertisement, music video, Page post, and reupload. That makes a format-neutral all-time winner impossible to establish from the same authority.

| Question | Most defensible answer |
|---|---|
| Most-viewed Facebook Live video | Candace Payne’s Chewbacca mask video, with more than 159 million views by July 19, 2016, according to Guinness. |
| Most-viewed Facebook video of any format | No single authoritative public ranking is established. |
| Most-viewed Facebook Reel in 2026 | Requires a defined source, date, region, and account universe; no universal public record is confirmed here. |
| Most-shared or fastest-growing video | A different category from total views. |
Meta renamed Facebook’s Videos tab to Reels in June 2025 and has been moving toward treating newly uploaded videos as Reels, regardless of length or orientation. The current product structure therefore does not map neatly onto the 2016 Facebook Live category. See Facebook’s current Reels guidance.
What “159 million views” actually means
A Facebook view is not automatically a unique person, a completed watch, or a share. Meta’s Page video-insights documentation separates measures such as minutes viewed and three-second video views. Meta defines a three-second view as playback for at least three seconds, or 97 percent of the video when the video is shorter than three seconds. These definitions can differ by product and period, so historical and current totals should not be compared as if they were identical measurements. Details appear in Meta’s video-insights help documentation.

- A view is not proof that someone watched to the end.
- A view is not the same as a share, reaction, or comment.
- Views on Facebook do not include the video’s totals on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, news sites, or copied uploads.
- Reuploads and compilations should not be added to the original record category.
What happened after the viral moment?
The clip produced a wave of media coverage and commercial attention. Reports described the Chewbacca mask becoming difficult to find in some stores, while Kohl’s responded with gifts and publicity. Payne was invited to Facebook headquarters and received interviews, appearances, merchandise opportunities, and speaking attention.
Later summaries, including the Chewbacca Mask Lady biography, have cited benefits and opportunities worth more than $420,000. Those figures combine different forms of gifts, publicity, and opportunity and should not be treated as independently audited income.

Why a definitive 2026 ranking is difficult
Facebook’s formats have changed
Facebook’s shift toward Reels means that a 2016 Live broadcast and a 2026 Reel may be distributed and counted within different systems. Meta reported that views and watch time for original Facebook Reels approximately doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, but that announcement does not identify an all-time individual record. See Meta’s originality update.
Metrics and public counters are not stable
Creator dashboards can expose measures that are not shown publicly, and definitions can change. Meta reported a 7 percent increase in views of organic Feed and video posts in the fourth quarter of 2025, alongside double-digit year-over-year growth in video time spent in the United States. Those platform-wide figures describe a changing environment, not a ranking of individual videos. See Meta’s 2026 performance report.
Copies complicate totals
The same footage may appear in Payne’s original post, news reports, fan uploads, compilations, and other platforms. Without a defined record category, adding those copies would mix separate videos and separate measurement systems.
Bottom line
If “most viewed” means the documented Facebook Live category, Candace Payne’s “Chewbacca Mom” video is the clear answer: Guinness recorded more than 159 million views by July 19, 2016. If the question means every video format ever uploaded to Facebook, no equally authoritative public leaderboard currently proves a single all-time winner.
