It was posted by a YouTube account whose name and handle had been changed to resemble Mangione after his arrest was widely reported. YouTube removed the channel for impersonation, while an independent metadata review found the file was last modified only two minutes before publication—evidence against a pre-arrest scheduled upload.
What the video claimed
The clip appeared on YouTube on December 9, 2024, shortly after Mangione’s arrest and the rapid spread of his identity online. It opened with the words “The Truth” and “If you see this, I’m already under arrest.” A countdown ran from five to one and then from 60 to zero. “Soon” and “Dec. 11” appeared briefly before the video ended with “All is scheduled, be patient. Bye for now.” Gizmodo documented the video’s wording and sequence.

Why it was not evidence of a scheduled message
The channel’s identity changed after the arrest
YouTube said the channel’s metadata was updated after widespread reporting of Mangione’s arrest, including changes to the channel name and handle. That means the account’s apparent connection to Mangione was created or strengthened after he became a major news subject, rather than verified as an account he operated.
The file timing points to a post-arrest upload
The Intercept examined the downloaded file with ExifTool and MediaInfo. Its analysis found that the video was encoded and last modified on December 9, 2024, at 14:33 GMT-5—two minutes before it was published on YouTube. That timestamp does not support the theory that Mangione prepared and scheduled the file before his arrest. It cannot by itself identify the uploader, but it directly undercuts the claimed pre-arrest timeline. Read The Intercept’s metadata analysis.

What YouTube did
A YouTube spokesperson said the company terminated the channel for violating its impersonation policy, which prohibits content intended to impersonate another person on the platform. The spokesperson also said YouTube terminated three other channels it identified as belonging to Mangione under its Creator Responsibility Guidelines; those accounts had been dormant for months. YouTube’s statements are quoted by Gizmodo.
Independent fact-checking
Lead Stories independently concluded that the account publishing “The Truth” was impersonating Mangione and reported that the account was removed. Its conclusion matches YouTube’s stated reason for the termination and The Intercept’s timing review. See Lead Stories’ fact-check.

What remains unknown
- The available reporting does not identify who created or modified the impersonating channel.
- No reliable evidence establishes the uploader’s motive.
- Claims about cryptocurrency, a “dead-man’s switch,” or a planned second video remain speculation, not established facts.
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: an account was altered to look like Mangione’s, published a theatrical countdown after his arrest, and was removed as an impersonation.

How to evaluate similar viral videos
- Check account provenance: look for a longstanding, independently verified account rather than a recently renamed profile.
- Compare the timeline: ask when the account identity, file, and upload were created or modified relative to the event being claimed.
- Separate platform action from authenticity: a removal reason such as impersonation is meaningful evidence about the account, but it does not reveal who operated it.
- Look for independent technical review: metadata analysis and reporting from more than one outlet can test whether a supposed scheduled upload fits the dates.
