Vince Gill released an extended version of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” on September 12, 2025, marking 30 years since the original song’s August 28, 1995 release. The change announced by MCA Nashville is a new verse; the announcement does not publish its lyrics or explain its subject.
What changed in the extended version?
The defining difference is the addition of a new verse. MCA Nashville’s announcement identifies the change but does not provide the verse’s words, so its content cannot be described from the available release information. The announcement is available through Vince Gill’s official news page.

When was it released?
The extended version came out September 12, 2025. The announcement dates the original song’s release to August 28, 1995, making the new version a 30th-anniversary release.
How do the digital listings present it?
Streaming services display the release differently. Apple Music lists a one-song single on MCA Nashville and shows a five-minute runtime. Spotify lists two tracks—an extended version and the original—each at 5:15. These are platform catalog listings, not evidence of a physical edition, and their track presentations should not be treated as interchangeable packaging.

What inspired the original song?
According to the official release announcement, Gill began writing “Go Rest High on That Mountain” after the death of his friend and labelmate Keith Whitley. The death of Gill’s brother Bob in 1993 compelled him to finish it. This account comes from the artist and label’s announcement rather than a newly published explanation of the added verse.
