Kunal Kamra’s video is his own account of a January 2020 exchange with journalist Arnab Goswami on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Lucknow. Scroll published the video on January 30, 2020, and framed it around Goswami’s coverage of Rohith Vemula’s suicide. The clip presents Kamra’s version. The airline’s suspension of Kamra and the minister’s remarks are separate, attributed positions, and the contemporaneous reporting around them is what lets a viewer check his account against the record.
What the video is
Scroll’s page gives the video’s headline, publication date and editorial framing. The accessible page exposes the embedded player but not a full transcript, so this article does not reconstruct the video scene by scene. What can be stated with confidence is the framing: Kamra presents his version of the encounter and centres his criticism on Goswami’s journalism, specifically his coverage of Vemula’s death.
What happened on the flight, by side
Contemporaneous reporting, including The Indian Express, identifies the flight as IndiGo 6E 5317 from Mumbai to Lucknow. The accounts below come from different parties and carry different weight. None of them is an independent finding of what happened.
Kamra’s account
According to Kamra’s post of January 28, 2020, as reproduced by Daijiworld, he approached Goswami to talk about his journalism. A flight attendant asked him to return to his seat, and he complied. He later approached Goswami again. He said he complied when asked to move and apologised to passengers other than Goswami, writing: “I do apologise to every passenger except one,”

IndiGo’s response
On January 28, 2020, IndiGo announced it was suspending Kamra from flying with the airline for six months. Its statement, as reproduced by The Indian Express, read: “In light of the recent incident on board 6E 5317 from Mumbai to Lucknow, we wish to inform that we are suspending Mr. Kunal Kamra from flying with IndiGo for a period of six months, as his conduct onboard was unacceptable behaviour.” The airline also advised passengers to refrain from personal slander onboard, saying such conduct could compromise passenger safety.
The Civil Aviation Minister’s position
Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said: “Offensive behaviour designed to provoke & create disturbance inside an aircraft is absolutely unacceptable & endangers safety of air travellers.” He also publicly urged other airlines to impose similar restrictions. - Established: the flight number and route, as identified in contemporaneous reporting.
- Established as statements only: Kamra’s account of the exchange, IndiGo’s six-month suspension announcement, and the minister’s remarks.

- Not established here: whether any other airline adopted the restrictions the minister urged.
The coverage cited here dates from January 2020, nearly six years before this article was written, so later developments are outside what can be confirmed from it.

How to weigh a creator’s account of a confrontation
A personal video is useful for understanding the speaker’s reasoning, but it is one party’s version. A reader can test it with a few checks:

- Sort each claim by source: the creator’s own statement, an organisation’s official statement, or independent reporting.
- Read reports dated close to the event. The IndiGo announcement and the minister’s remarks both date to January 28, 2020, and the Kamra post is dated the same day.
- Note what the framing explains and what it does not. Kamra’s focus on Goswami’s coverage of Vemula explains his motive, but it does not establish what was said or done on the plane.
- Keep two questions apart: what happened in the cabin, and whether the response was proportionate. The reporting cited here contains official positions on the second question, not a legal ruling.
