Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteVijay Sethupathi’s point is simple: believing you have nothing left to learn can close you off to new ideas. In a January 2024 interview with Scroll, the actor said the advice came from a friend. He connected it to staying open while building a character, and to the practical choices involved in making films.
Advice he says came from a friend
“A friend referred me to a piece of wisdom – if you think you are the greatest, you stop learning new things,” Sethupathi told Nandini Ramnath in her Scroll profile, published January 6, 2024. The thought is not presented as a maxim he invented. It serves as a way into his view of curiosity: a performer who assumes they already know everything has less room to notice what a role, a director or another person might offer.
In the same answer, Sethupathi offered two more personal reflections: “Secondly, when you get angry and you don’t know why, that’s something to battle.” He continued, “Lastly, if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, it will kill you.” These are his observations about managing anger and unchecked desire, not clinical advice or universal rules.
How staying open shapes his acting
Sethupathi described a process that leaves room for discovery rather than locking in a performance before work begins. “I read my lines but I don’t fix anything, otherwise it can’t be changed later. I absorb.” He also put the relationship between work and thought plainly: “When you work, you think.”

That openness does not mean arriving without preparation. He says he reads the lines, then avoids deciding too soon exactly how they must be delivered. The distinction matters: a fixed interpretation can make later adjustment harder, while absorbing the material leaves possibilities available as scenes develop.
Questions are part of the collaboration
Sethupathi said he asks directors many questions, including what he called “unnecessary, stupid questions.” He values being told that he has brought out what the director wrote. The aim, as he describes it, is not to impose an interpretation but to understand the material and help realize the director’s intention.

Director Sriram Raghavan recalled their discussions about Albert, Sethupathi’s character in Merry Christmas: “Vijay and I used to have long discussions about Albert and he would narrate stories about similar people he had met.” Director Gayatri likewise described his response to character ideas as having “a childish excitement”; she said, “he is inquisitive, he likes to theorise.”
Curiosity alongside the realities of film work
The interview also presents a less romantic side of making films. Sethupathi acknowledged that actors may take commercial roles as well as other kinds of work, and said that a film’s success can help an actor secure investor confidence for the next one. That is his account of the economic pressures around film production, not a quantified rule that applies identically to every actor or project.

His artistic preferences and commercial decisions therefore sit alongside each other. The interview does not suggest that curiosity removes the compromises of a working film career; rather, it shows him describing questions, discussion and openness as part of how he approaches the work available to him.

Ramnath’s profile was published while Sethupathi was in Mumbai promoting Merry Christmas, directed by Sriram Raghavan. Its comments and observations belong to that interview, rather than serving as an update on the film or Sethupathi’s later career. The article discusses his roles, including Vikram Vedha, 96 and Super Deluxe, and includes collaborators’ perspectives on his approach.

The advice about learning is a personal reflection, not a demonstrated formula for better acting or career success. The interview offers no measured evidence that humility causes learning. Its value is in the concrete working attitude Sethupathi describes: read the lines, keep an interpretation changeable, ask questions and remain receptive to other people’s ideas.
