A 2014 video showed a man trying to take a selfie as a train passed. Press reports said he was close enough that the conductor kicked him in the face. The lesson is simple: do not stand near a moving train or railway tracks to take a photo. The reports describe the incident as a close call that went wrong, and they do not establish a safe distance.
What the reporting says happened
BGR published the story on April 16, 2014. Its account attributes the sequence to a post by the participant, whom BGR identified as Jared Michael. As BGR told it, he tried to take a selfie as a train went by and was close enough for the conductor to kick him in the face. Yahoo carried a syndicated version of the same report on the same day.
BGR quoted the man’s own words about the incident:
- “I guess I was still too close and got kicked in the head.”
- “I messed up.”
These are his statements as reported by BGR. They are not an official account from a railway operator or an investigating body.

Two names, one clip: how the outlets differ
The participant’s surname is not consistent across the coverage. Readers searching for the story will see both names, so it helps to know which outlet uses which.

Because the surname differs between reports, attribute it rather than presenting one name as settled. Write “Jared Michael, as BGR identified him” or “Jared Frank, as ABC News identified him.”

Where and when it was filmed
ABC News places the filming in Peru. None of the reports identify the station, the railway line, or a more precise date than the spring of 2014 coverage. Readers should treat the location as ABC News’s reporting rather than a verified detail from the railway or the footage owner.
The safety lesson: distance from moving trains and tracks
The man’s own admission that he was too close is the most direct lesson in the coverage. Do not stand on or near railway tracks, and do not stand close to a train that is moving or about to move, to take a photo or video. The reports do not give a safe distance, and no figure in this article should be read as one.

Camera gear does not change the risk. A longer selfie stick or a different phone does not make it safe to be within reach of a passing train. The hazard is physical proximity to the train, and that is the thing to avoid.

- Rights holder: ABC News reported that Jukin Media acquired the clip and described licensing interest in it. Jukin Media’s communications director, Mike Skogmo, was quoted by ABC News: “Our whole business is to get the maximum out of a video for the creator.”
- Earnings suggestion: ABC News also reported a suggestion that Frank could earn up to $250,000. Skogmo reportedly called that figure probably an overestimate and would not confirm it. Treat the figure as an unconfirmed estimate. The reporting does not establish that the man received any particular amount.
The coverage does not say whether the licensing arrangement continues in 2026 or what terms currently apply. Anyone looking into licensing today should check Jukin Media’s current status and terms directly.
