The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) opened early access to its digital library on January 30, 2025. Anyone can browse its publicly available digital materials online for free, without special credentials. The archive offers historical research materials—not a collection of commercial games to play—and its public site represents only materials that have been cataloged or processed for access.
What can you find in the VGHF library?
The library brings together materials useful for studying video game history, including development and production documents, magazines, artwork, promotional materials, press assets, event ephemera, and research reports. VGHF describes the launch collection as including previously unseen development material, artwork, press kits, and promotional items.
Examples named in the January 30, 2025 launch announcement include the Mark Flitman papers; the first 100 CDs from GamePro’s art and press-release archives, reformatted for browser viewing; searchable directories and maps from E3’s first 12 years; and international FromSoftware promotional materials collected by Kris Urquhart and donated with the company’s blessing. These are launch examples, not a complete list of the archive’s contents.

Is access free, and who can use it?
Yes. VGHF says anyone can access the public digital materials from anywhere in the world, with no special credentials. The online archive is intended to support research into video game history; ordinary browsing does not require a paid subscription.

That free public access is distinct from staff-mediated access to original or unprocessed materials. According to the Foundation’s library FAQ, researchers may request such materials through staff, at staff discretion, and that service may be paid. It is not a charge for viewing items already available in the online archive, and a request is not guaranteed to be granted or answered.
Can you search every VGHF holding online?
No. The public catalog and the digital archive describe different stages of access. The collections catalog covers collections cataloged and available to the public; the digital portal presents items that have been processed and have a digital copy available. A catalog record does not necessarily mean a scan can be viewed online, and neither page should be treated as a complete inventory of everything the Foundation holds.

Cataloging and digitization are ongoing, with additions dependent on available resources and labor. The official pages reviewed for the launch do not give a current total of publicly available digital items.
Can you play games in the archive?
No. The library provides documentation and other historical materials about games, not downloadable or playable commercial games. VGHF says it generally does not collect retail games and has no plans to provide them for researchers to play. The Foundation also points to US copyright restrictions on digital access to out-of-print games.

Can you reuse scans in a video, article, or book?
Do not assume that a scan visible online is cleared for republication. VGHF says it often does not own the intellectual property in the materials and cannot grant general permission to reproduce them. Its explanation that it relies on fair use for some materials describes the Foundation’s approach to building an educational research tool; it is not a legal ruling or blanket permission for users.
Check the relevant item or collection notes for permissions and follow the archive portal’s researcher agreement, which limits use to research or private study. If you plan to publish or otherwise reuse material, seek rights advice and obtain any permissions required for your specific use.
