In January 2019, videos showed Zhang Pengfei, principal of Xi Guan Primary School in Linyi county, Shanxi province, leading pupils in a shuffle dance during their break. The routine, called “Guibu” or “ghost steps,” was his attempt to make break-time exercise more engaging—not a health program with measured results.
Who was the principal in the dance video?
Zhang Pengfei was the principal of Xi Guan Primary School in Shanxi province. The South China Morning Post located the school in Linyi county. January 2019 reports showed Zhang dancing outdoors with pupils, while teachers joined in too. South China Morning Post’s video report and its coverage of the routine documented the scene.
What dance did he teach?
The reports call the routine “Guibu,” also translated as “ghost steps.” It is a shuffle dance incorporating modern-jazz elements. Zhang learned the routine himself and taught it to students; the videos show pupils and teachers following his lead. Scroll.in’s January 22, 2019 report describes him learning and teaching the dance.
Why did the school use a dance during break?
Zhang said he wanted to give students another way to exercise during their break. Scroll.in quoted him telling the South China Morning Post: “This is just a small activity at our school – I just wanted to offer a different way to exercise during the class break.” The SCMP video report also attributed to him the concern that students spent time in front of computers and phones; that is his stated motivation, not evidence of an observed health effect.

These reports place the dance in the context of established school exercises, but they are not primary government sources.
What the 2019 coverage does—and does not—show
SCMP reported that one Facebook clip was viewed seven million times in a day. That figure refers to a single clip as reported in 2019; it is not a current view count or an independently verified measurement.

The coverage presents the routine as a lively alternative for break-time exercise. It does not report a study, measured fitness or health outcomes, or whether Xi Guan Primary School still uses the dance today. The story is best understood as a snapshot of Zhang and his pupils dancing together in 2019, rather than confirmation of a continuing school program.
