Which ecommerce video metrics matter?
Organize measurement around the job each video is meant to do. Exposure tells you whether people had an opportunity to watch; attention shows how far they got; interactions show whether they acted on the video; store events show what happened later in the shopping journey.

Vimeo describes its retention graph as showing the percentage of views remaining at each point in a video. Wistia’s GA4 integration documentation describes progress events at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. These are useful ways to locate drop-off, but report the platform and calculation used rather than assuming the measures are interchangeable.
Connect video activity to the store funnel
A practical measurement chain is:
Player load → play → progress or retention → product or CTA interaction → product-page behavior → add-to-cart → checkout → purchase

Not every shopper will follow every step, and not every analytics setup can capture or join every transition. The chain is a reporting framework, not a claim that each event was observed or that a video caused a purchase.
Check that the necessary events arrive
- Confirm video tracking. Identify which system records player loads, plays, progress milestones, CTA or card activity, and form submissions. Wistia documents a GA4 integration that can send plays, viewing progress, form submissions, and CTA clicks into GA4; availability and configuration depend on the account and setup.
- Confirm store tracking separately. Google’s ecommerce reporting requires relevant ecommerce events, including
add_to_cartandpurchase, to be sent from the website or app. Do not assume that a video integration supplies store events. - Test the path before drawing conclusions. Check that expected video and store events appear in the intended reports, use compatible identifiers where available, and agree on event names and reporting windows. A documented integration does not mean a particular merchant’s setup is already connected.
- Write down the measurement limits. State what events were observed, how records were joined, the attribution window, and which channels, app flows, or third-party tools are not included.
Keep platform-specific reports in scope
Shopify’s search conversion report describes sessions with interactions with storefront search results, including an ordered funnel. It is specific to tracked storefront search, has stated exclusions for some Buy Button or third-party app cases, and is not a universal report attributing sales to video. Shopify’s broader analytics fields include product views, added-to-cart rates, checkout measures, and session behavior. Shopify also warns that changes to session measurement can affect session-based figures, and that a longer session is not necessarily better.

Compare videos fairly
Compare videos on the same measures when they serve a similar purpose, audience, and placement. A product explainer, a shoppable video, and an acquisition landing-page video may need different success measures; ranking them by views alone can obscure whether each did its intended job.
- Exposure: Compare impressions, starts, and view rate by placement and traffic source.
- Attention: Compare average percentage watched, completion, and retention patterns for similar audiences and formats.
- Interaction: Compare CTA or product-link clicks and form submissions, with impressions as the denominator where available.
- Store progression: Compare relevant product-page, add-to-cart, checkout, and purchase events after exposure or interaction, using a stated attribution window.
- Efficiency: If production or distribution costs are available and measured consistently, compare them with outcomes. The platform documentation described here does not establish a universal ecommerce video cost formula or benchmark.
A high completion rate is evidence of attention, not proof of commercial value. A low view rate can reflect broad exposure or an audience mismatch rather than a poor video. Interpret both alongside the video’s job and the audience and placement that generated the numbers.

Use interactions and outcomes without overstating attribution
Counts need context. A CTA click count is more useful beside CTA impressions or the number of viewers who could see it. A purchase count is more useful when the report explains which sessions or users are included, the time window, and how the video touchpoint was associated with the store event.
Keep association distinct from causation. If purchasers watched a video, that relationship does not show that the video made them buy; shoppers who were already more likely to purchase may also be more likely to watch. To claim a causal effect would require a suitable causal measurement design, not just a dashboard sequence of video and ecommerce events. The cited platform documentation defines analytics and event capabilities; it does not establish a general causal result or ecommerce-wide video benchmark.

Choose analytics tools based on the question
For embedded video, Wistia’s media analytics documentation describes engagement and traffic reporting, and its GA4 integration documentation covers sending video events into GA4. Vimeo’s analytics documentation describes impressions, views, view rate, retention, completion, and interaction measurements for forms, cards, and CTAs. Some Vimeo analytics features depend on membership tier. Check current account availability and configuration before building a reporting plan around a feature.
Use the store analytics system for downstream shopping events, then verify that the video and store data can be compared in a usable measurement setup. No independent ecommerce-wide video conversion benchmark is established by these platform materials, so avoid judging a result against an invented “average.”
