Carnage is red because Venom: Let There Be Carnage deliberately designed him that way—and the filmmakers shaped the movie’s color treatment to make that vivid red work onscreen. Director Andy Serkis described Carnage as “so saturated, bright red” and said the film was driven in part by the challenge of his color. That is a design explanation, not evidence that every red symbiote belongs to a different species.
Why is Carnage red in Venom 2?
In the 2021 film, Carnage’s red is a deliberate visual choice. In a September 29, 2021 interview with PlayStation Blog, director Andy Serkis explained that the production had to get Carnage’s “saturated, bright red” right and adjust the film’s broader color treatment to meet it. He said, “The whole film in a sense was driven by the colour of Carnage.”
Serkis also connected the symbiotes’ appearance and behavior to their hosts. “They reflect the inner being of the host,” he said. For Carnage, the film used an unsettling, fluid movement style that Serkis compared to a squid or octopus, with tendrils that can move independently and become weapons. That visual language reflects Cletus Kasady’s twisted, idiosyncratic character; it does not establish red as a biological rule for symbiotes.
Is Carnage a different species from Venom?
The available film-design explanation does not establish that Carnage and Venom are separate species. It presents them as distinct characters with contrasting designs and movement, shaped in part by their different hosts: Eddie Brock is associated with Venom, while Cletus Kasady is Carnage. Sony’s official film page identifies Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady/Carnage.

- Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one of MARVEL?S greatest and most complex characters. In search of his next big story, journalist Eddie Brock lands an exclusive interview with convicted murderer and death row inmate Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who discovers Eddie?s secret and becomes the host for Carnage, a menacing and terrifying symbiote.
In Marvel’s comics-character summary, Carnage comes about when an offspring of the Venom symbiote merges with Kasady. That parent-and-offspring relationship describes the comics continuity; it should not be treated as an explicit biological rule for every detail of the film adaptation. Marvel’s Carnage character page provides that concise comics summary.
Is Carnage Venom’s offspring?
In the comics, yes: Marvel describes Carnage as the result of a Venom symbiote offspring merging with Cletus Kasady. This explains the characters’ relationship in that continuity, but it does not mean Carnage is a different species or that red is a universal marker of offspring. The film’s color choice is explained by its director as a filmmaking and characterization decision.

Does a red symbiote mean it is stronger?
Not on the evidence available here. Neither the director’s design comments nor Marvel’s brief character summary establishes a color-based power ranking. Carnage’s red appearance alone is not a sound basis for claiming that red symbiotes are inherently stronger, belong to a fixed hierarchy, or share a distinct species-wide trait.
