Varanasi has unveiled a substantial first-look glimpse, but the available reporting does not confirm a separate, full-length official trailer. The film is S.S. Rajamouli’s standalone, globe-spanning adventure, with Ramayana mythology and natural disasters around a father-and-son emotional core. It is announced for worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
Is there an official Varanasi trailer?
The footage unveiled in November 2025 was described in reporting as a first look, glimpse, or concept teaser—not as a confirmed full-length trailer. The nearly four-minute presentation offered an early look at the film’s scale and imagery. Rajamouli also alluded to a sequence inspired by an important episode from the Ramayana. The Associated Press reported on the unveiling; the reporting available here does not establish that a separate official trailer has since been released.

What is the plot of Varanasi?
A globe-spanning story across eras
The film’s official-description synopsis, reproduced by India Today, says the story unfolds over thousands of years and travels from Antarctica and Africa to Varanasi. It describes the adventure as being “in the vein of Indiana Jones and James Bond.” That gives a sense of its scope and genre, but it is not a full scene-by-scene plot.
An asteroid and a possible saviour
The same India Today article reproduces a Letterboxd synopsis that frames the premise around an asteroid striking Varanasi and asks whether a saviour must cross continents and timelines. Treat this as a synopsis-level outline, not a detailed or independently confirmed account of the film’s events.

Mythology and the emotional core
Rajamouli’s own description points to the elements he wants the audience to experience: Antarctica’s cold and ice, the gods of the Ramayana, natural disasters and fantastical material. He also identified the relationship between father and son as the story’s emotional core. The Indian Express reported his comments after an Annecy masterclass.
Rajamouli has described Varanasi as a standalone film, rather than a franchise entry. More detailed claims about particular characters, an artifact or their occupations have appeared as reported synopsis copy, but the director’s public description and the broader synopsis establish the story more securely than those specifics do.
