The first look at Varanasi confirms a star-led SS Rajamouli film and introduces Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Its imagery points toward a mythic adventure with time-travel elements, but the detailed plot remains undisclosed.
What does the Varanasi first look show?
The verified Varanasi Movie channel published the first-look video on 15 November 2025. The title and video were unveiled in Hyderabad, according to the Associated Press. The imagery offers clues to the film’s scale and themes, not a complete account of its story.
The Associated Press described the video as signaling a time-travel adventure with Hindu mythological elements. It also reported that Rajamouli referred to a Ramayana sequence. Those are story hints attributed to the unveiling and its coverage; the AP said detailed plot information remained under wraps. Rajamouli said the film would be projected in IMAX, the AP reported at the time.
Who stars in Varanasi, and what are their roles?
The official video description names Mahesh Babu as Rudhra and lists Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the cast. It does not identify character names for Chopra or Sukumaran in the surfaced official description.

Cinema Express reported on 30 January 2026 that Chopra plays Mandakini and Sukumaran plays antagonist Kumbha. Those role descriptions are attributable to that outlet; they should not be confused with what the official video description itself confirms.
Who is making the film?
The official video description credits SS Rajamouli as filmmaker and M. M. Keeravaani for the music. It lists the story as by V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. S. Kanchi, and names Dr. K. L. Narayana and S. S. Karthikeya as producers. The film was previously announced under the working title Globe Trotter, according to the Associated Press.

When is Varanasi expected to release?
The announced cinema date is 7 April 2027. Cinema Express reported that date on 30 January 2026, and India Today reported on 1 July 2026 that the film remained on track for it.
India Today also reported Rajamouli’s update that 80 shooting days remained, with completion expected around September or October 2026. That was a production estimate reported in July, not confirmation that filming was completed. Release and production schedules can change.

- Confirmed by the official video description: Mahesh Babu is Rudhra; Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran are in the cast; Rajamouli is the filmmaker; Keeravaani is the composer.
- Reported story clues: the first-look imagery suggests time travel and Hindu mythological elements, and Rajamouli alluded to a Ramayana sequence, as reported by the Associated Press.
- Not established as a full synopsis: how the mythological and time-travel elements fit together, the central conflict, and the complete character arcs. The AP said detailed plot information remained under wraps.
The most reliable way to interpret the first look is as an introduction to the film’s cast, creative team, and broad mythic-adventure signals—not as a scene-by-scene explanation of the plot.
