Who kidnapped the children?
Elena did. The apparent kidnapping was a scheme she arranged, not an abduction carried out by Pietro’s creditors. She drugged Bianca and Giovanni and moved them to her home, creating a disappearance that would make Pietro scramble to produce ransom money while their custody dispute was underway.

The film’s setup makes Pietro’s creditors seem like a possible explanation. He owes €250,000 in gambling debt, and a caller demands €150,000 for the children’s return. Those are plot amounts stated in Netflix’s official synopsis, not real-world figures.
How does Pietro discover Elena’s plan?
- The children disappear. While Elena is away, Bianca and Giovanni vanish from Pietro’s home. The ransom call gives him a deadline and a specific sum to find.
- Pietro turns to Nicola. Already burdened by gambling debt, he asks Nicola, an old criminal associate, for money. Nicola agrees only if Pietro takes on a dangerous drug-related job.
- Pietro reaches Elena’s home. After carrying out the job, he finds the children safe there. Elena behaves as though no kidnapping occurred, and the children do not remember being away.
- A medicine package changes Pietro’s understanding. The packaging left behind gives him a clue that the children were drugged. He puts together that Elena arranged the disappearance. Radio Deejay and High on Films also identify the medication as the clue to Pietro’s realization.
Why did Elena stage the disappearance?
She uses the incident as leverage in the conflict over custody. The ransom demand forces Pietro into a desperate attempt to raise money, and Nicola’s dangerous job becomes part of the chain of consequences. The film’s resolution identifies Elena as the person behind the scheme, though it does not provide a fully explained account of every motive behind her decision.

What does the ending mean?
Pietro chooses not to tell the children what their mother did. That decision leaves the family’s immediate secret intact, but it does not resolve the custody conflict or establish what Elena will do next.
In the closing moments, a blurred figure appears near the house. The image suggests Elena may still be close by; it does not confirm why. A viewer might interpret the figure as a sign of lingering attachment, a renewed threat, or another attempt to influence the custody situation, but none of those intentions is stated as fact. What to Watch likewise frames the final image as open to interpretation.

What kind of film is Vanished into the Night?
Vanished into the Night is a fictional 2024 Italian thriller directed by Renato De Maria and written by Francesca Marciano and Luca Infascelli. Netflix identifies Riccardo Scamarcio as Pietro and Annabelle Wallis as Elena. The story is set in Bari, Italy, and is based on the Argentine-Spanish film 7th Floor (Séptimo), not on a book, according to Netflix Tudum.
