Vancouver’s Homelessness and Toxic-Drug Crisis: What the Downtown Eastside Documentary Title Gets Right—and Wrong

Official figures clarify the scale of homelessness in Vancouver and toxic-drug deaths across British Columbia—and why the documentary’s “Zombie Zone” label and Zack Snyder reference need qualification.

The documentary listing titled “Vancouver Homeless Crisis 2026: Downtown Eastside Turns Into Canada’s ‘Zombie Zone’” is published by US Homeless Reality. Its title uses sensational language, but official figures offer a more grounded view: Vancouver’s 2025 homelessness count found 2,715 people experiencing homelessness across the city, while British Columbia recorded 1,826 preliminary unregulated-drug-toxicity deaths province-wide in 2025. Neither figure is specific to the Downtown Eastside, and the listing does not establish that filmmaker Zack Snyder made or endorsed the documentary.

What is happening in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside?

The Downtown Eastside is part of a wider housing and toxic-drug crisis affecting Vancouver and British Columbia. The official data available here describe conditions at two different scales: the City of Vancouver’s homelessness count covers the city, while drug-death totals cover the province. They should not be read as neighborhood statistics or as counts of the same people.

The provincial government attributes the toxic-drug crisis to an unpredictable, unregulated drug supply, compounded by housing instability, poverty, stigma, and barriers to care. That framing points to overlapping problems rather than a single cause. The figures below document the scale of homelessness and fatal drug toxicity, but do not by themselves explain individual experiences or establish conditions on a particular Downtown Eastside block.

How many people are homeless in Vancouver?

The City of Vancouver’s 2025 point-in-time count identified 2,715 people experiencing homelessness: 763 were unsheltered and 1,952 were sheltered. The City says the count does not fully capture homelessness; the City Council report describes it as a 24-hour snapshot that is understood to undercount the total. The Council report says the 2025 total was 12% higher than in 2023.

That comparison is useful as a city-level indicator, not a complete census. A one-day count cannot capture everyone experiencing homelessness over a longer period, and the reported increase does not mean that every part of Vancouver changed at the same rate.

What do British Columbia’s toxic-drug death figures show?

The Province of British Columbia and BC Coroners Service reported a preliminary total of 1,826 unregulated-drug-toxicity deaths across the province in 2025. That was approximately 21% below the preliminary 2024 total of 2,315. These are annual provincial mortality figures, not a Downtown Eastside tally and not a count of overdose incidents. Because the 2025 figure is preliminary, it should be treated as subject to revision.

The province also reported that more than 18,000 British Columbians had died from toxic drugs since the 2016 public-health emergency declaration. This cumulative figure is province-wide; it cannot be assigned to Vancouver or the Downtown Eastside on the basis of the information reported here.

Is the Downtown Eastside officially called Canada’s “Zombie Zone”?

No. “Zombie Zone” is sensational wording in the documentary listing, which says that “some” describe the area that way. It is not an official designation established by the cited City or provincial sources. The phrase reduces a complex neighborhood and its residents to a stigmatizing label, so it is more accurate to treat it as promotional framing than as a factual description.

Did Zack Snyder make or endorse this documentary?

The exact-title YouTube listing names US Homeless Reality as its publisher. Despite the title’s reference to “Documentary Zack Snyder,” the listing does not establish that Zack Snyder made or endorsed the video. Its title and description should not be treated as independent verification of the documentary’s claims.

How to read the figures alongside the documentary

  • Use the homelessness count as a City of Vancouver measure, not a Downtown Eastside count.
  • Use the drug-toxicity figures as British Columbia totals, not neighborhood-level deaths or nonfatal overdose counts.
  • Keep preliminary annual mortality figures distinct from final totals and from the 2016-onward cumulative figure.
  • Treat “Zombie Zone” as the publisher’s sensational framing, not an official name or an evidence-based statistic.
