WCW made his gothic look and brawling style recognizable, but it was one chapter in a career that crossed countries and forms of entertainment. He retired from in-ring competition in April 2026; a September report described a stage project and continued wrestling-business ties.
Who is Vampiro?
Vampiro is the ring name of Ian Hodgkinson, a Canadian professional wrestler. His career took off in Mexico, where he built a following before WCW brought him into its U.S. programming. WWE’s retrospective profile describes him as a lucha libre star whose Mexican reputation preceded his American run.
What made Vampiro recognizable in WCW?
A gothic presentation with a brawling style
WCW presented Vampiro with a dark, gothic image: sunken-eyed makeup, punk-rock styling and an air of menace. WWE’s profile contrasts that look and his lucha-star billing with the kick-and-punch brawling style he often used in the United States. His character stood apart from the more conventional presentation of many wrestlers on the roster.
His place in WCW
WCW introduced Vampiro in 1998 and placed him in storylines involving wrestlers including Sting, Eddie Guerrero and Konnan, as well as the Insane Clown Posse. WWE lists him as a WCW World Tag Team Champion. That accolade is a concrete part of his WCW record, but it should not be mistaken for proof that he became a top mainstream U.S. headliner: WWE’s own account describes his American profile as comparatively fringe.

Why Mexico matters to his career
Vampiro’s story is not simply that WCW made him famous. His popularity in Mexico was already an important foundation, and the contrast between his established Mexican reputation and more limited U.S. recognition helps explain why fans may remember him differently across regions. WCW gave him a prominent American chapter and a distinct television character; it did not mark the beginning of his wrestling career.
Why did Vampiro retire from in-ring wrestling?
Hodgkinson retired from in-ring competition in April 2026. His farewell took place at JCW’s Strangle-Mania: Viva Las Violence in Las Vegas, a promotion with a personal connection to him through his friendship with the Insane Clown Posse. TV Insider described the appearance as his final U.S. match, while PWTorch reported his retirement explanation the following day.
In the PWTorch interview, he said the decision came down to “just where I’m at physically,” citing severe injuries and getting older. He described choosing JCW for the farewell because of his friendship with ICP and the promotion. Those are his stated reasons; the retirement concerns wrestling performances, not necessarily every role connected to the business.
Where is Vampiro now?
The latest update in the sources cited here is an El Universal/El Gráfico profile dated September 27, 2026. It reports that Hodgkinson is developing a stage project called El Mundo a través de mis Ojos (“The World Through My Eyes”), about his life, and says he has a wrestling company in Italy. The report also describes him as retaining ties to wrestling. It does not provide independently corroborated details here about the project’s schedule, the company’s name or his exact operational role, so these should be understood as outlet-reported plans and activity—not as a verified current match schedule.

In an April 2026 PWTorch interview, Hodgkinson said he learned about WWE’s negotiations with AAA after the deal had been completed and that he had already stopped speaking with AAA before then. He said, “I found out on Instagram about three weeks after the deal was done.” He also described his experience at AAA as feeling that he was not fully accepted because he came from another company. These are his accounts and opinions, not independently established findings about AAA’s internal decisions or how Mexican fans responded.
