Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old Mexican beauty creator and salon owner, was killed in May 2025 while livestreaming from her business in Zapopan, Jalisco. Authorities opened an investigation under femicide protocols. Later reporting described competing, attributed allegations about possible involvement; the sources available here do not establish a final conviction or case disposition.
Who was Valeria Márquez?
Márquez was a beauty content creator and the owner of Blossom The Beauty Lounge, a salon in Zapopan, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. She was 23 when she was killed. Reuters reporting republished by The Guardian identified her as an influencer and salon owner.
What happened during the livestream?
Márquez was killed at her salon while broadcasting live on TikTok in May 2025. The incident took place in Zapopan; this does not mean that the full livestream remains available on the platform.
The Associated Press reported that a masked person had earlier visited the salon posing as a delivery driver and claiming to have an expensive gift. In the minutes before the shooting, Márquez voiced fear. AP quoted her saying: “Maybe they were going to kill me,” followed by, “Were they going to come and take me away, or what? I’m worried.” These are words attributed to her in AP’s English-language account of the video. Read the Associated Press report.

Why was the case investigated as femicide?
In May 2025, the Jalisco prosecutor’s office said the case was being investigated under femicide protocols, according to Reuters reporting republished by The Guardian. That describes the investigative framework authorities said they were using; it is not, by itself, a final judicial finding about motive or a court’s determination that a crime legally constituted femicide.
The regional context does not decide the facts of this case. The same report said Mexico recorded 1.3 femicides per 100,000 women in 2023, citing the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and ranked alongside Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia at the region’s fourth-highest rate. That statistic provides context only; it is not evidence of the motive in Márquez’s killing.

What have investigators and officials said about possible perpetrators?
The May 2025 assessment
In May 2025, Jalisco prosecutor’s spokesperson Denis Rodríguez told AP that investigators believed the attack appeared to be a hired killing, while cautioning against jumping to conclusions. This was an assessment reported at that point in the investigation, not a court finding or established motive. AP’s account also described the earlier visit by a person posing as a delivery driver.
The July 2026 allegation
On July 31, 2026, EL PAÍS reported that federal security secretary Omar García Harfuch publicly alleged that the son of Ramón Álvarez Ayala, known as R-1, was involved and said authorities were seeking him. The report says Álvarez Ayala had been detained and his son remained sought by authorities at that time. These are attributed allegations and investigative developments, not a judicial determination of guilt.
