The script is intentionally secular and adaptable; add faith-specific language only when it suits the audience and the event’s tradition.
Choose a format before you begin
Valentine’s Day is observed in the United States on February 14 and is commonly associated with cards, candy, flowers, and shared meals, though people do not all celebrate it in the same way. [American English, U.S. Department of State]
Pick the version that matches your group, rather than treating one script as a universal ceremony:
| Format | Audience and framing | Shape and timing | Participation and materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| School or community gathering | Flexible, secular; focus on kindness, friendship, and appreciation. | Welcome, brief framing, optional activity, closing. Set timing to fit your event. | Participants may make or share messages; cards and exchanges should be optional. Card-making can use colored paper, scissors, pens, and glue. |
| Language-learning lesson | British Council plan is for B1/B2 secondary and adult learners. | Its lesson plan specifies 60 minutes, with a vocabulary warm-up, discussion, reading, and role-play. | Use its lesson structure if language learning is the goal; it is not a general-purpose ceremony. [British Council] |
| Youth-ministry outreach | Student outreach in a home or school setting; adapt the message to the organization’s beliefs. | A relaxed, welcoming social format; the source does not prescribe a fixed duration. | Student hosts can greet newcomers. [Cru] |
| Faith-based classroom or campus group | Religious framing appropriate to the group’s own tradition and age range. | A brief gathering with a Scripture matching or puzzle activity is one option. | Check the activity’s permissions and fit before use; Saint Mary’s Press grants classroom or campus-ministry use for its listed activity. [Saint Mary’s Press] |
For a school event, keep participation low-pressure. Responsive Classroom notes that some students can feel left out and that costs may burden families; do not require purchases or a card for every student. [Responsive Classroom]

Ready-to-read script for a school or community gathering
Replace bracketed details with your own. The activity is optional, and participants can take part by making a card, writing a message, or simply listening.
Welcome
Host: “Welcome, everyone. We’re glad you’re here. Today we’re taking a little time to notice kindness, friendship, and the people who help make our community a good place to be.”
Brief framing
Host: “In the United States, Valentine’s Day is observed on February 14. People may mark it with cards, candy, flowers, or a shared meal, but celebrations vary. Today, you don’t need to bring anything or give anything to anyone. We’ll focus on appreciation and making everyone feel welcome.”
Host: “Think of someone whose kindness, help, or friendship you appreciate. That could be a friend, family member, classmate, colleague, or someone in this community. You can keep your thought private if you prefer.”
Optional card or message activity
Host: “We’re going to make a card or write a short appreciation message. You can give it to someone, keep it, or skip the activity and listen. There’s no expectation to exchange cards.”
Set out colored paper, scissors, pens, and glue if you have them. Invite participants to write a specific, kind message—for example, “Thank you for helping me,” or “I appreciate how you include others.” Avoid prompts that require participants to name a romantic partner or disclose personal feelings.
Host: “You’ll have [number] minutes. If you want, make a message about something the person did that mattered to you. Please give people room to choose whether to share.”
Optional sharing
Host: “Would anyone like to share a message or describe a kind act they noticed? Sharing is optional; you can also pass.”
Allow a few volunteers to speak. If no one volunteers, offer a general example of appreciation without naming someone who has not agreed to be included.
Rank #4
Closing
Host: “Thank you for being part of this. You can take your message with you, give it to someone if you choose, or leave it private. A small act of kindness can help someone feel seen. We hope you carry that spirit into the rest of your day.”

For secondary or adult learners at B1/B2 level, the British Council’s Valentine’s Day lesson is designed for 60 minutes. Its sequence—vocabulary warm-up, guided discussion, short reading, and role-play—fits a lesson better than a brief ceremony. Use this prompt to start a cross-cultural discussion:
Teacher: “How do people in your country celebrate Valentine’s Day or a similar special day?”

Invite learners to discuss the date, activities, gifts, and relevant cultural information. Make space for different customs and for participants who do not celebrate the day; no one needs to speak for an entire country or disclose personal experiences.
Adapt it for youth ministry or a faith-based group
For youth outreach, keep the gathering social and welcoming. Assign student hosts to greet newcomers, and make the event’s message consistent with your organization’s beliefs. Cru’s planning guidance describes an outreach in a home or school setting; it does not establish one required format or script.
A Scripture matching or puzzle activity may suit a religious classroom or campus group. Saint Mary’s Press lists an activity for classroom or campus-ministry use; check its directions and permissions and make sure it fits your audience’s age and tradition. Do not present a popular story about Saint Valentine’s life as settled history without stronger historical support.
