Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and later recovered, but he said treatment and two tracheotomies left his voice impaired. He adapted to communicate and continued acting, while his memoir and the documentary Val preserve his account. Reports attributed his death in 2025 to pneumonia, not cancer.

Diagnosis, treatment and a changed voice

The Associated Press reported that Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and recovered after two tracheotomies. The available accounts do not establish the cancer’s type or stage, a complete treatment timeline, or the precise medical reason for either procedure.

In Val, Kilmer recounts losing his voice while preparing to perform Citizen Twain in Nashville. He said it worsened, he coughed blood and he was rushed to hospital. He also described extensive radiation and chemotherapy as leaving his voice impaired. This is Kilmer’s account of his experience, not a complete medical record. The documentary passage is written by Kilmer and narrated by his son, Jack.

In a 2020 interview with Good Morning America, Kilmer said, “I’m doing great, I feel a lot better than I sound.” The gap between how he felt and how his voice sounded became part of how he publicly explained his recovery.

How Kilmer adapted to communication and acting

A tracheotomy changed how Kilmer communicated, but he rejected the idea that it made communication—or acting—impossible. In August 2020, he described the challenge this way: “It’s just like any other language or dialect.” The comparison framed communication as something to learn and adapt to, rather than a reason to stop trying.

In Val, Kilmer’s words, narrated by Jack, include: “Now that it’s more difficult to speak, I want to tell my story more than ever.” The documentary presents his storytelling as a response to the difficulty of speaking, while making clear that some of what viewers hear is his son voicing his written words.

Where to find Kilmer’s own account

I’m Your Huckleberry: A Memoir

Kilmer’s memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry: A Memoir, was published on April 21, 2020. It is his written account and a natural place to look for his perspective in his own words. The interview confirming its title and publication date does not establish current editions or availability.

The documentary Val

The 2021 documentary draws on footage Kilmer recorded over many years. ABC News Australia reported that it used more than 800 hours of footage. Kilmer’s son Jack narrates his father’s written words in parts of the film, so its first-person perspective combines archival material with narration rather than relying only on Kilmer speaking in his own voice.
