Netflix documents a compact set of keyboard shortcuts for watching on a computer: use Spacebar to pause or resume, the arrow keys to seek or change volume, and F for fullscreen. The table below lists the official controls, with a note about the intro-skip key, which differs on one of Netflix’s localized help pages.

Netflix keyboard shortcuts that officially work

These controls are for Netflix playback on a computer, not universal commands for phones, tablets, smart TVs, or game consoles. Click inside the video player first so it has keyboard focus; otherwise, a browser control or another application may receive the keystroke.

Action Shortcut Notes
Play or pause Enter or Spacebar Netflix specifically notes Spacebar support in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 apps.
Enter fullscreen F On some laptops, function-key settings or keyboard utilities may affect the key.
Exit fullscreen Esc Netflix specifically notes Esc support in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 apps.
Rewind 10 seconds Left arrow
Fast-forward 10 seconds Right arrow
Increase volume Up arrow
Decrease volume Down arrow
Mute M
Skip intro S on several official help pages Netflix’s Spanish-language page currently lists T instead, so the intro key may vary by locale or player version.

Netflix’s computer shortcut guidance is at Netflix Help Center: keyboard shortcuts. The intro-key difference appears across its Filipino, Japanese, and Spanish pages.

Put the shortcuts to work during a binge

  • Use the left arrow to replay a line or moment you missed; the right arrow moves forward in 10-second increments.
  • Press M to mute quickly, or use the up and down arrows for smaller volume adjustments.
  • Use Spacebar or Enter to pause without reaching for the mouse, and F to enter fullscreen.
  • Use the on-screen intro-skip control if the documented key does not work in your locale or player.

Why a keyboard shortcut may not work

A valid shortcut can appear broken if the Netflix player is not the active target. The address bar, a search field, a chat window, or another app may have focus. Fullscreen can also change how browser controls and extensions handle keys. On some laptops, the F key’s behavior depends on the Fn setting or an operating-system utility.

UltraPro OneTouch Backlit Remote Control for Smart TV
  • NO PROGRAMMING REQUIRED FOR SIX TV BRANDS — Preprogrammed buttons instantly control Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TVs and Roku TVs (some Sharp and Insignia Roku TVs may require programming); requires two AAA batteries (not included)
  • STREAMING APP HOTKEYS — Dedicated buttons provide direct access to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube when installed by the TV manufacturer; support for user-installed apps may vary
  • FULLY BACKLIT KEYPAD — Illuminated buttons improve visibility and navigation in dark rooms, bedrooms, media rooms and other low-light environments
  • DESIGNED FOR SMART TVs — Convenient replacement remote for compatible Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TV and Roku TV models throughout your home
  • EASY SETUP AND CONTROL — Simply insert two AAA batteries and select your TV brand; no programming required for supported TVs
  1. Click once inside the Netflix video player, then try the shortcut again.
  2. If F or an arrow key is intercepted, exit fullscreen and retry from the player.
  3. Try playback in a supported computer browser or the current Netflix Windows application. Netflix lists computer-viewing options in its computer help page; browser and app availability can change.
  4. Reload the title if the player controls have become unresponsive.
  5. Temporarily disable a browser extension that may remap keys, then test again.

The documented controls are a short native set. Do not assume that keys such as J, K, L, number keys, or a subtitle-toggle key are Netflix-native shortcuts.

Change playback speed when the player offers it

Slower playback can help with dense dialogue, unfamiliar accents, or language practice; faster playback may suit a recap or familiar passage. Normal speed is often preferable when music, comedy timing, or dramatic pacing matters.

  1. Start a film or episode.
  2. Pause playback.
  3. Select the speed icon in the playback controls.
  4. Choose an available rate. Return to the same menu to restore normal speed.

Netflix documents speed controls for web browsers and its Android, iPhone, and iPad apps, but the options are not identical across every title, device, app, or plan. The feature is unavailable while casting or screen mirroring from a mobile device, and Netflix says it is unavailable in a web browser on an ad-supported plan. See Netflix’s playback-speed guidance.

Use on-screen controls for subtitles and audio

Netflix does not list a native keyboard shortcut for changing subtitle languages, subtitle appearance, or audio tracks in its shortcut guide. Use the playback controls’ Audio & Subtitles menu instead. Language choices depend on what the title offers.

If subtitles are missing or intermittent, check the selected language and choose it again in that menu. Reload the title, then try another title to see whether the issue is specific to one program. If playback is also unstable, check the network; Netflix notes that device or connection issues can affect subtitles and recommends checking whether the network allows video services.

  1. Open the playback controls and confirm the subtitle language.
  2. Reload the title if subtitles do not appear or keep dropping out.
  3. Test another title to distinguish a title-specific issue from a broader one.
  4. Check whether the Wi-Fi network or provider restricts video services, and test the connection with Fast.com.
  5. If the problem persists, restart the app or device; restart the home network if other devices are affected too.

Netflix’s subtitle troubleshooting guidance covers network and device issues. Fast.com tests the connection to Netflix, but it does not diagnose every Wi-Fi, browser, or device problem.

Reduce buffering on a computer

  • For a fixed computer setup, use a wired connection where practical.
  • Pause other high-bandwidth activity if playback is buffering.
  • If the issue affects several devices, restart the home network.
  • Use Fast.com as one check, then compare whether the problem occurs on one device or across the account’s devices.

These checks can help narrow down a connection problem, but a speed-test result alone does not identify its cause. Netflix’s subtitle and connection troubleshooting page also recommends Fast.com.

Optional: browser extensions for extra controls

A Chrome Web Store extension advertises configurable commands beyond Netflix’s documented shortcuts, including longer skips, subtitle and audio controls, percentage jumps, and episode navigation. Those are extension features, not evidence of native Netflix support. The listing is available at Netflix Keyboard Shortcut in the Chrome Web Store.

Consider an extension only if the native controls do not meet your needs. Review its requested permissions before installing it: extensions may stop working after player changes, conflict with other extensions or browser shortcuts, and may not work in the Windows app, on mobile, on TVs, or while casting. Avoid using an extension as the first fix for missing subtitles or unstable playback.
