Run FFmpeg as a systemd service with a restart policy and a delay so systemd can relaunch the process after a covered failure. For some output errors, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can also attempt recovery without exiting. These are separate recovery layers: neither guarantees that YouTube will preserve the same live event, playback continuity, or media position. Check YouTube Studio after any recovery.
How the two recovery layers work
systemd supervises the FFmpeg service process. Its restart policy acts when that process exits in a way covered by the policy. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer, by contrast, can attempt to recover from some output failures while FFmpeg remains alive. Neither mechanism repairs a bad input, invalid credentials, or a persistent network or service fault.
| Approach | Trigger | What happens to FFmpeg | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| systemd restart policy | The service process exits in a way covered by its configured policy. | systemd starts the process again after any configured delay. | After restart, media may replay or skip depending on the input command. YouTube may not restore the intended live-event state automatically. |
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | A recoverable output or muxer error occurs. | FFmpeg remains running and attempts output recovery. | It applies only to eligible errors; it does not solve persistent faults, invalid inputs, or bad credentials. |
Use the FIFO muxer and systemd as complementary layers if their behavior suits the stream. Confirm the stream state in YouTube Studio rather than treating a running process as proof that the broadcast is healthy.
Configure FFmpeg as a systemd service
The following is an adaptable example, not a tested configuration. Replace the command and paths with the ones used on your VPS. Do not put a real stream key in a publicly readable unit file or paste it into logs or support requests.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a restart policy deliberately
Restart=on-failureis a common choice when abnormal exits should be retried but an intentional clean stop should remain stopped.Restart=alwaysalso restarts after clean exits; use it only if that is intended.- Use a restart delay and consider systemd start-rate limits so a persistent fault does not create a tight restart loop.
Accepted directives and start-limit behavior can vary by systemd release. Check the installed version and its local manual before relying on a particular setting.
Create and check a unit
- Create a service unit under
/etc/systemd/system/, for example/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-stream.service. Include a suitableAfter=network-online.targetdependency if appropriate for your host, and configure the service user, working directory, and FFmpeg command for your setup. - In the unit’s
[Service]section, set the chosenRestart=policy and a deliberateRestartSec=delay. These are example directive names; verify support and behavior with your installed systemd manual. - Reload systemd’s unit definitions with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start the service with
sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-stream.service, then inspect it withsudo systemctl status ffmpeg-stream.service. - To have it start at boot, enable it with
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-stream.service. Enabling a service and starting it are separate actions. - Inspect recent service output with
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Protect logs if the command or environment could expose credentials.
Optionally enable FFmpeg FIFO output recovery
FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer controls for attempting recovery from some output failures. Confirm the options against the documentation for your exact FFmpeg build or run ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo on the VPS before changing the output command.

attempt_recoveryenables attempts to recover the output.recovery_wait_timesets the delay between recovery attempts. FFmpeg’s documentation gives a default of 5 seconds; this is an option default, not a performance recommendation, and should be verified against the installed build.max_recovery_attemptscan limit repeated failures. FFmpeg documents a default of zero, meaning unlimited attempts.recover_any_errorbroadens the errors eligible for recovery. FFmpeg notes that certain errors considered usually permanent are not attempted by default.
FIFO queue behavior is another trade-off: dropping packets can keep processing in real time while omitting stream content; blocking avoids dropping packets but can hold up the encoder. FFmpeg documents a default queue size of 60 packets. Treat both that figure and the recovery defaults as version-specific documentation values, not recommended settings.
Diagnose a stream that does not recover
- Inspect the service: run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-stream.serviceand reviewsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Determine whether FFmpeg exited or is still running. - Read the final FFmpeg error: identify whether it points to input/media, output, credentials, or a connection failure. A restart loop without addressing the underlying error will repeat the failure.
- Check the input: verify the media path, permissions, and availability from the service’s configured user and working directory.
- Check the output configuration securely: confirm the endpoint and stream key are the intended ones without exposing the key in a ticket, screenshot, command history, or publicly readable file.
- Check outbound connectivity and routing: investigate host firewall, route, or network issues indicated by the error. Do not infer that the managed inbound firewall is blocking an outbound publishing connection.
- Verify YouTube’s state: open YouTube Studio and confirm that the expected broadcast is receiving the stream and in the intended state. Process recovery alone does not establish this.
Understand Contabo firewall layers and reboots
Contabo describes its Firewall feature as a network-level control separate from the operating system firewall. When assigned, it blocks inbound traffic by default until allow rules are configured, while outbound traffic remains unrestricted. If the managed firewall is not enabled, Contabo says default port access is unrestricted. The operating system firewall can have its own inbound and outbound rules. For a stream pushed from FFmpeg to YouTube, check the actual error, host rules, and route instead of assuming the managed inbound firewall blocks publishing traffic. Contabo’s firewall explanation and firewall feature guidance describe these separate controls.

A VPS reboot is broader than restarting one service. If the operating system is accessible, Contabo advises preferring a reboot from within the operating system; its panel reboot shuts down and restarts the server. Use the current panel workflow if a panel reboot is necessary, since the published help-page URL may change. For a single FFmpeg service failure, first investigate and restart the service rather than rebooting the entire VPS. Contabo’s reboot guidance
