The Reddit post behind “Updated Sites and Sources for Free Books” is now marked [Removed], and several older links and claims from circulating copies are no longer reliable. The useful part of the list survives: there are still excellent legal sources for open textbooks, historical books, research reports, and documentary background reading.
The key distinction is whether a book is openly licensed, in the public domain, or merely available to read temporarily through a library or controlled digital lending service. The sites below cover those categories without sending you toward unauthorized textbook downloads.
Best sources for free, legal books
OpenStax
Best for: introductory college-level science, mathematics, business, social science, nursing, and related subjects.
OpenStax is one of the simplest places to find a complete, legally free textbook. Go to OpenStax Subjects, choose a subject, select a title, and use the format options under Get the book. Most titles can be read online or downloaded as PDF or DOCX files. Some books also include exercises and other material under the Student Resources tab.

Check the license on the individual title before reusing or adapting material. Many OpenStax books use a Creative Commons license that permits sharing and adaptation but restricts commercial use.
Important update: OpenStax discontinued EPUB downloads in April 2026. Older articles that recommend an EPUB button are out of date; current options include web, PDF, DOCX, and print. If you have an old PDF, compare its revision number with the version shown on the book’s current details page.
Open Textbook Library
Best for: open textbooks across a broad range of academic disciplines.
The Open Textbook Library currently lists 1,834 open textbooks, not the roughly 1,000 titles cited by older resource lists. From the homepage, select Browse Subjects, choose a discipline, and open a title.
The library is a catalog and referatory: different authors and publishers provide the books, so formats vary. Some titles offer PDF, online, or editable files; others provide only certain formats. An open textbook has a license allowing free use and, depending on its terms, modification and redistribution.
Do not assume that an instructor edition is included. The library does not maintain separate instructor copies. Instructor guides, test banks, and presentation files must be obtained from the relevant author or publisher when available.

LibreTexts
Best for: chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, engineering, business, social science, and mixed open educational resources.
LibreTexts works differently from a conventional ebook store. Open the site, select a subject library, choose Bookshelves, and then browse by textbook or topic.
A result may be a complete book, a single chapter, a textmap, a faculty-customized remix, an exercise collection, or a course shell. Inspect the title, table of contents, and license before treating it as a complete textbook. Some course shells can be exported as PDFs or printed, but permissions can differ from one resource to another.
Internet Archive and Open Library
Best for: older books, public-domain works, scanned material, and books available through controlled digital lending.
The Internet Archive Texts collection contains more than 2.5 million ebooks, including material supplied by the Library of Congress. Access depends on the individual item. Some books are freely downloadable; others can only be borrowed or viewed under restrictions.

To search, enter a title or author and optionally select Show only eBooks. Open a result and choose Read or Borrow. Borrowing requires an account. Open Library says one-hour browsing loans and 14-day full loans are available, with up to ten simultaneous loans. If every copy is in use, you may join a waiting list; after notification, you generally have 24 hours to borrow the book.
Open Library is therefore not a place where every scanned book can be downloaded as a normal PDF. A borrowable or preview-only title remains subject to copyright and lending restrictions.
Project Gutenberg
Best for: public-domain literature, history, classics, and older works.
Project Gutenberg lists more than 77,000 free ebooks, principally works whose U.S. copyrights have expired. Search by author, title, subject, language, format, or popularity, open a book, and select one of its reading or download formats.
It is an excellent source for primary texts and classic literature, but it is not a dependable source for current commercial textbooks. A Gutenberg edition may omit the page design, illustrations, footnotes, exercises, or supplementary material found in a modern edition. Copyright status can also vary by country.
Libby
Best for: current nonfiction, trade books, audiobooks, and occasional assigned textbooks.

Libby gives you access to the digital catalog of participating libraries, not to a universal free-book database. You need a library card for each library from which you borrow.
- Open the Libby app and select Menu → Add Library.
- Search by library name, city, or ZIP code.
- Add the library and follow the prompts to enter your card details.
- Search for a title, open its details, select Borrow, choose the loan period beside Borrowing for…, and select Borrow again.
- Find active loans under Shelf → Loans.
To find books available immediately, open a search or list, open the filter control, choose Availability → available now, and select Show Titles. If your library does not own a book, Libby may show Notify Me, although that feature is optional and not offered by every library.

The mobile app normally supports Wi-Fi downloads for offline reading. The browser version at libbyapp.com requires an internet connection.
MIT OpenCourseWare
Best for: building context around a subject through lecture notes, syllabi, assignments, exams, videos, and selected readings.
MIT OpenCourseWare publishes material from thousands of MIT courses without requiring enrollment, payment, or an account. It is particularly useful when researching a documentary subject and you need an academic framework rather than one isolated book.
Search by course or subject, open a course, and inspect Syllabus, Readings, Lecture Notes, Assignments, and Exams. Do not assume every title listed in a syllabus is downloadable. MIT notes that some readings are proprietary or copyrighted and are available only within the original classroom context. OCW also provides no academic credit or certificate.

HathiTrust Digital Library
Best for: older academic books, government publications, and research-library collections.
At HathiTrust, public-domain titles can generally be read in full. Copyrighted books may be searchable without being fully viewable. Full-book downloads are usually limited to users affiliated with participating institutions; other readers may receive page-by-page access only.
National Academies Press
Best for: science, medicine, engineering, public policy, and authoritative research reports.
National Academies Press provides free PDF versions of many books and reports. On an individual title page, look for format-specific options such as Download Free eBook (.mobi), Download Free eBook (.epub), or Download Free Audiobook. These options vary by title, so check the page rather than assuming every format is offered.

- Identify the provider. A university press, government agency, library, or recognized open-textbook project is more reliable than an anonymous PDF site.
- Check the access label. “Read,” “Borrow,” and “Preview” describe different rights and different levels of access.
- Read the license. Free access does not automatically permit copying, commercial use, translation, or adaptation.
- Verify the edition. A free older edition may differ substantially from the edition required by a course.
- Use the official domain. Avoid pages that imitate a publisher, force multiple redirects, or offer newly released commercial books with no explanation of the rights.

What is the best site for free college textbooks?
OpenStax is usually the quickest choice for introductory courses. The Open Textbook Library and LibreTexts offer broader subject coverage, but formats and licensing vary by title.
Can I legally download books from Open Library?

Does Libby provide free books without a library card?

For a genuine free textbook, start with OpenStax, the Open Textbook Library, or a clearly licensed LibreTexts title. For historical and documentary research, add Internet Archive, Open Library, Project Gutenberg, HathiTrust, and National Academies Press. Use Libby when you have library access, and treat MIT OpenCourseWare as a source of structured course material rather than a guaranteed textbook archive. Most importantly, distinguish free to read from free to copy and reuse.
