In Naruto’s official material she is his granddaughter, and the official Hashirama profile describes her as his firstborn grandchild. The official profiles do not name a son of Hashirama as Tsunade’s parent, and they do not provide a biography for any such figure. The idea of a “Hashirama’s son” standing between them is therefore not established canon. This article sets out what the official sources do say, shows where the gap lies, and follows how Hashirama’s legacy reaches Tsunade’s story.
The relationship, stated correctly
The title’s premise runs the family line the wrong way. Hashirama is the older generation, and Tsunade is his descendant. The table below lists only the relationships the official profiles state.

The table shows where the official canon ends. The official sources establish Tsunade as Hashirama’s granddaughter. They do not identify the parent who links her to him, so any named or detailed “son” is an inference rather than a documented character.
Canon versus inference
Readers often run into the “Hashirama’s son” idea through fan theories, summaries, and search results that fill in an unnamed parent. Separating the two layers makes the story easier to follow.

- Established canon: Hashirama is the eldest son of Butsuma Senju; Tsunade is Hashirama’s granddaughter and firstborn grandchild.
- Not specified in the official profiles: the identity, role, or biography of Tsunade’s parent.
- Inference or fan-created detail: any claim that a particular son of Hashirama raised Tsunade, passed down the necklace, or appears in a scene not described in the official columns.
Keeping that line in view also clarifies what the official material can and cannot support. It can explain how Hashirama’s values travel to Tsunade. It cannot supply a father figure for her that the sources never name.
What the official Hashirama profile establishes
The Hashirama column, published October 23, 2023, presents him as the founder-era figure of Konoha. It places his childhood in the Era of Warring States and describes him as the eldest son of Butsuma Senju, head of the Senju Clan. It also says he cared deeply for villagers and for shinobi from other nations. Its most direct link to Tsunade is a family scene: the column describes him doting on her as his firstborn grandchild and cites manga volume 65, chapter 619 for that relationship.
Readers who want to see the scene for themselves can start with volume 65 of the Naruto manga, the volume the official column cites. The column itself is the primary source for the relationship; it does not offer a further account of Tsunade’s parentage.

How Hashirama’s legacy reaches Tsunade
The official Tsunade column, published August 2, 2024, treats the Hashirama connection mainly through three threads: family affection, the First Hokage’s necklace, and the “Will of Fire” idea.

Family affection
The Hashirama column’s account of him doting on his granddaughter gives the family tie an emotional dimension, not only a genealogical one. The legacy the official sources emphasize is personal as well as political.
The First Hokage’s necklace
According to the official Tsunade profile, Tsunade gave the First Hokage’s necklace to her younger brother Nawaki for his twelfth birthday, and he died the following day. Later, Tsunade gives the necklace to Naruto after he renews her belief in carrying Konoha’s future. The necklace therefore marks two transfers of responsibility, one that ends in loss and one that begins a new commitment.

The Will of Fire
The official Hashirama column connects his influence to the “Will of Fire” legacy. In the Tsunade column, the same idea appears in her decision to trust Naruto, which is why the official sources treat it as a value passed between generations rather than a single object or title.
“JUST AS MY GRANDFATHER THE FIRST HOKAGE BELIEVED IN YOU AND ENTRUSTED KONOHA TO YOU… …IT IS NOW YOUR TURN TO DO THE SAME FOR THE CURRENT YOUTH OF KONOHA!!”

The official English column attributes this line to Tsunade’s speech to Konoha’s counselors and links it to Naruto volume 45, chapter 421. It is a character’s dialogue, and it is the clearest statement in the official material that Tsunade sees herself as the inheritor of Hashirama’s trust.

Tsunade’s life in the official profile
Tsunade’s life is the larger subject of the official column, and it explains why her grandfather’s legacy matters to her story. The profile covers her as a medical ninjutsu specialist and a member of the Legendary Three, alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru. It says she trained under Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Nawaki’s death
The column recounts the death of Nawaki, which is the loss that shapes much of Tsunade’s later conduct. The necklace episode is part of this story and is cited in the official profile to volumes 18, 45, and 46.
Advocacy for medic ninja
The official profile describes Tsunade’s advocacy for medic ninja and her defense of Naruto’s potential. Both are presented as part of her character development rather than as separate achievements.

Fifth Hokage and the Fourth Great Ninja War
The column covers her service as Fifth Hokage and her leadership during the Fourth Great Ninja War. It cites manga chapters from volumes 59 and 61 in connection with this part of her life.
Dates and birthdays in the official profiles
The official columns give birthdays for both characters: October 23 for Hashirama and August 2 for Tsunade. These are character details from the official birthday columns. They do not establish any further family relationships.
What is and is not established
As of the official Hashirama and Tsunade profiles, the family line is clear at the level of grandfather and granddaughter. Hashirama is the First Hokage and the eldest son of Butsuma Senju; Tsunade is his granddaughter and firstborn grandchild. Any claim that names a son of Hashirama as her parent, or describes that son’s life, goes beyond the official columns cited here. Readers who see that claim should treat it as an unverified inference.
The official profiles reference specific manga volumes and chapters, including volume 65, chapter 619 for the Hashirama scene and volume 45, chapter 421 for the quoted dialogue. Those references are the best starting point for anyone who wants to check the original scenes.
