Until Dawn (2025) is a survival-horror film built around repetition, consequence, and changing threats. Directed by David F. Sandberg, it uses the name and choice-driven spirit of the 2015 PlayStation game without retelling that game’s mountain-lodge story. The result is a new story about a group searching for a missing woman in a remote valley, only to become trapped in a night that keeps restarting.
What is Until Dawn (2025) about?
The film begins one year after Melanie disappears. Her sister Clover travels to Glore Valley with Max, Abe, Nina, and Megan to investigate what happened. The group takes shelter in an apparently abandoned visitor center, where a masked attacker kills them.
Instead of ending there, the night resets. The survivors awaken at the beginning of the same evening and are forced to repeat their journey. Each cycle introduces a different killer or supernatural danger. Their objective is not simply to escape one attacker, but to understand the valley, locate clues connected to Melanie, and survive enough deaths to reach daylight.
This structure gives the film a clear video-game influence. The characters can learn from previous attempts, recognize locations, and alter their actions. However, the movie remains a linear feature rather than an interactive production: viewers do not select dialogue or decide which characters live.

A new story rather than a game adaptation
The most important distinction is that the film does not adapt the original game’s plot. The 2015 Until Dawn follows eight young people returning to a remote mountain lodge, where their relationships and survival are shaped by player decisions. Its story involves branching outcomes and a specific ensemble of characters.
The 2025 film has a new setting, new protagonists, and an original mystery. PlayStation described it as a fresh story in the same world, retaining the game’s interest in decisions, consequences, and uncertainty rather than reproducing its events.
The time loop is the film’s main translation of game logic into cinema. In the game, players may replay scenes to discover different outcomes. In the film, the characters themselves experience repeated attempts, with each death revealing more about the rules of the night. That approach lets the adaptation acknowledge its source without pretending that a conventional movie can offer the same branching experience as a game.

Cast and characters
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Ella Rubin | Clover |
| Michael Cimino | Max |
| Odessa A’zion | Nina |
| Ji-young Yoo | Megan |
| Belmont Cameli | Abe |
| Maia Mitchell | Melanie, also called Mel |
| Peter Stormare | A role listed by Netflix without detailed character information |
Peter Stormare is the clearest connection to the game. He played Dr. Alan J. Hill in the 2015 title and returns as a link between the two projects. The film otherwise centers on a new ensemble led by Ella Rubin as Clover, whose search for her sister drives the story.
Director, writers, and production
David F. Sandberg directed the film. Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler wrote the screenplay. The producers include Sandberg, Dauberman, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Mia Maniscalco.
Sandberg’s background in horror includes Lights Out and the Annabelle: Creation franchise. For Until Dawn, the central challenge was to make repetition feel like escalation rather than simple duplication. The premise allows the filmmakers to shift between different forms of horror as the characters learn more about the valley.

The critical response has been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 51% Tomatometer score from 119 critics and a 66% audience score from more than 1,000 verified ratings. Metacritic likewise records a mixed response. Reviews have differed over whether the film’s independence from the game is a strength, whether its horror devices are too familiar, and how effectively individual sequences use the premise. Audiences looking for a direct recreation of the game’s characters and plot may be disappointed; viewers interested in a separate time-loop horror story may find the distinction useful.
At the box office, the film opened in the United States and Canada with $8,003,402 from 3,055 theaters. Its reported totals were $20,172,192 domestically, $33,932,872 internationally, and $54,105,064 worldwide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes the film different from the game?
- Story: The movie follows Clover and her friends in Glore Valley; it does not retell the lodge story.
- Characters: The original game’s eight playable characters are not the film’s central cast.
- Structure: The film is a fixed, linear feature. It does not let viewers choose actions or unlock alternate endings.
- Consequences: Repeated deaths and altered attempts imitate the game’s trial-and-error design.
- Connection: Peter Stormare provides the most visible casting link between the game and the movie.
That distinction matters when deciding what kind of adaptation Until Dawn is. It is best described as a new horror story inspired by the game’s world and design philosophy, not a filmed version of the original campaign.

FAQ
Is Until Dawn (2025) a remake of the video game’s story?
No. It is an original story with new characters, set in the same broader world. It does not directly adapt the game’s mountain-lodge plot or original playable ensemble.
Does the movie let viewers make choices?
No. The finished film is a conventional linear movie. Its repeated-night structure reflects the game’s focus on decisions and consequences, but viewers cannot control the characters or select alternate paths.
Is Peter Stormare in the 2025 film?
Yes. Netflix lists Peter Stormare in the cast. He is also the principal returning performer from the game, in which he played Dr. Alan J. Hill.
How long is Until Dawn (2025)?
The better-supported runtime is 103 minutes, or 1 hour and 43 minutes. Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes, and Box Office Mojo list that length, while a 94-minute listing appears elsewhere.
Where can you watch Until Dawn (2025)?
Netflix lists the film as available to stream. The exact catalog and availability can vary by territory.
The Bottom Line
Until Dawn (2025) is not a documentary and should not be approached as a faithful screen version of the PlayStation game. It is a new, R-rated horror mystery that turns the game’s replay-and-consequence ideas into a time-loop narrative. Its strongest point of interest is that adaptation choice: instead of copying the original characters, it asks what a cinematic Until Dawn story can do with repeated attempts, accumulating clues, and multiple kinds of danger.
