Hit Man is not the story of a professional assassin. It is a fictionalized account of Gary Johnson, a real investigator who spent years pretending to be a contract killer so prosecutors could catch people trying to hire one.

Directed by Richard Linklater and co-written by Linklater and star Glen Powell, the Netflix film uses that extraordinary premise as the starting point for a romantic crime comedy. The real case was stranger in some ways—and considerably less cinematic in others.

Who was the real Gary Johnson?

Gary Johnson worked for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston, Texas. His assignment was to pose as a hit man when police or prosecutors learned that someone was seeking a contract killing.

The operation was preventative rather than investigative in the usual sense. Johnson met prospective clients, listened to their plans and gathered evidence while law enforcement recorded the conversations. The goal was to arrest them for soliciting murder before an actual killing took place.

Johnson was not originally a district-attorney investigator. Contemporary reporting said he had spent about a decade working undercover as a narcotics officer for police agencies in Louisiana and Texas. He joined the Harris County district attorney’s office in 1982, and his first documented fake-hit assignment came in 1989.

Over approximately 12 years, Johnson took part in about 100 meetings while posing as a contract killer. A detailed 2001 Washington Post account reported that around 55 of those meetings resulted in murder-solicitation charges against more than 60 people. Later summaries often describe the total as more than 70 arrests, but the contemporary figures are more specific.

How much of Hit Man is true?

The most accurate description is “inspired by a true story,” not “based on the life of Gary Johnson.” The screenplay draws on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly article, also titled “Hit Man,” but reshapes the material into a movie about identity, desire and reinvention.

In the film What the reporting supports
Gary works in New Orleans with the New Orleans Police Department. The real Johnson worked in Houston for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
He creates a series of flamboyant hit-man identities, including “Ron.” He used disguises and adjusted his presentation, but the film greatly heightens the costumes, accents and personas.
Madison becomes his romantic partner. A real woman sought help arranging the killing of an abusive boyfriend. Johnson referred her to social services, a therapist and a women’s shelter. There is no reported evidence of a romance.
Gary and Madison kill corrupt colleague Jasper and conceal the crime. The real Johnson did not kill Jasper—or anyone else. The murder and cover-up were invented for the film.
Gary’s academic life is part of his unusual double identity. Johnson really was a part-time college teacher who taught subjects including psychology and human sexuality.

Why does the film move the story to New Orleans?

Changing the setting gives the movie a distinct visual and dramatic world, but it also makes it easy to mistake the fictional Gary for the real one. The actual sting operation was based in the Houston area, where Johnson worked for the county district attorney’s office.

The film’s Gary is also more directly involved in police technology and surveillance than the available accounts suggest. That material helps establish him as an awkward, technically minded man who discovers that his greatest skill is reading people.

The real story behind Madison

The film’s central relationship has a small factual seed but a fictional outcome. In Hollandsworth’s account, an unnamed woman approached the undercover “hit man” because she wanted her abusive boyfriend dead. Johnson recognized that she was in an abusive situation and responded by connecting her with legitimate support services.

Hit Man turns that brief encounter into Madison Masters, played by Adria Arjona. Madison does not simply ask Gary to remove a problem; she becomes the person who draws him into a new identity. Their romance drives the movie’s emotional plot and eventually forces Gary to decide which version of himself he wants to be.

That is a major screenwriting expansion. Madison is best understood as a fictionalized adaptation or composite, not as a documented real girlfriend of Johnson.

Did Gary Johnson ever kill anyone?

No. The film makes this clear in its closing acknowledgment: the real Gary Johnson never killed anyone. The shooting of Jasper, the corrupt colleague, is entirely fictional.

This distinction is important because Johnson’s work depended on controlled deception. He acted like a dangerous criminal to create evidence, but the purpose of the operation was to stop violence. His success came from persuading would-be clients that he could commit murder while ensuring that no murder occurred.

Gary Johnson’s disguises and “Ron”

Johnson did use different appearances and identities in his undercover work. That part of the movie reflects the basic method described in reporting about him. But the film expands ordinary undercover adjustments into a parade of memorable characters.

Glen Powell’s version of Johnson develops “Ron,” a confident, aggressively masculine persona who seems to attract the sort of clients Gary’s quieter self would avoid. The contrast lets the movie explore a familiar question in an unusual setting: is an undercover identity merely a performance, or can it reveal a person’s suppressed traits?

In reality, the disguises were practical tools. In the film, they become a visual language for Gary’s transformation.

His life as a teacher

One of the most unusual details to survive from the real story is Johnson’s work in education. He taught college courses part time, including psychology and human sexuality. That background gave the filmmakers a natural way to connect his classroom knowledge with his undercover work.

The movie presents Gary as a mild-mannered academic who understands behavior, motivation and fear. His ability to alter his voice, posture and manner is treated almost like an applied psychology experiment. The real record supports the professor detail, although the film makes it central to the character’s arc and adds equipment-building and other dramatized elements.

What happened to Gary Johnson?

Gary Johnson died in 2022, before the film was made and released. The movie is dedicated to him with the words “Gary Johnson 1947–2022.” Reliable accounts reviewed for the film’s background do not publicly establish his cause of death.

Because Johnson did not see the finished film, Hit Man is not a conventional first-person life story. It is Linklater and Powell’s imaginative response to a remarkable law-enforcement career, filtered through comedy, romance and thriller conventions.

When was Hit Man released?

Hit Man opened in select theaters on May 24, 2024, before arriving on Netflix in select countries, including the United States, on June 7, 2024. Netflix lists it as a 2024 R-rated comedy starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona and Austin Amelio.

The bottom line on the true story

Gary Johnson was real, and so was the bizarre job at the heart of the film: he posed as a contract killer in order to catch people soliciting murder. His Houston investigations, undercover personas, teaching career and intervention in an abuse case all have roots in reported events.

But the New Orleans setting, Madison romance, “Ron” persona, Jasper’s murder and the movie’s cover-up ending belong to the screenplay. Hit Man is compelling precisely because it takes a strange factual premise and asks a fictional question: what happens when the role you play starts to feel more authentic than your ordinary life?

The Bottom Line

Hit Man is inspired by Gary Johnson’s real undercover work, not a faithful biography. Johnson posed as a hit man in Houston, helped secure murder-solicitation charges and never killed anyone. The film’s New Orleans setting, romance with Madison, elaborate identities and violent ending were created for the screen.
