What is it like to search for belonging in a place you call home? That question, posed by Scroll’s review, gets to the heart of Unmoored, Ramachandran Usha’s Tamil novella Karai Thedum Odangal in Krupa Ge’s English translation. Three women return to Chennai after working in the Gulf, hoping to reconnect with family—and finding that home has changed while they were away.
What is Unmoored about?
Ayesha, Indu and Ameera each come back to Chennai after leaving for work in the Gulf. Ayesha hopes to reconnect with her children, Indu with her husband, and Ameera with her natal family. Their returns are not simple reunions: time apart has reshaped relationships, and each woman has to meet the lives her family built in her absence.
Ameera’s story opens with her release from prison and separation from her son. Scroll’s excerpt presents her return to India and her wish to see him, establishing the emotional stakes of the novella. The Book Review likewise links the Chennai setting with the women’s earlier experiences in Dubai. These are critical readings of the novella’s setting, rather than claims that the book represents every migrant worker’s experience.
What makes the English translation distinctive?
Krupa Ge translates Usha’s Tamil novella into English. In Scroll’s assessment, Ge creates a vivid sense of place, while some word choices struck the reviewer as unusual. That is one reviewer’s response, not a general verdict on the translation.

Unmoored may suit readers interested in translated Tamil fiction, stories of migration and return, or women navigating work and family ties across distance. Its particular point of entry is the uneasy homecoming: the women return to a familiar city, but familiarity does not restore what separation has changed.
