Unlocking the Sound: How to Connect Roku to External Speakers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right connection depends on your Roku setup. With a Roku TV, connect a soundbar or receiver to the television’s HDMI ARC/eARC port, using optical audio when ARC is unavailable. With a Roku Streaming Stick, Express, Ultra, or similar player, route sound through the separate TV or an AV receiver rather than normally connecting speakers to the Roku player itself. Roku Wireless Speakers are a separate, host-dependent system—not universal Bluetooth speakers.

Identify your Roku setup first

  • Roku TV: Roku software is built into the television. External audio connects to the TV.
  • Standalone Roku player: A stick or box sends picture and sound to another TV over HDMI. The TV’s audio output, or an intermediary receiver, normally feeds the speakers.
  • Roku Streambar, Streambar Pro, or Roku Smart Soundbar: The Roku device already includes a sound system and can act as the audio hub.
  • Roku Wireless Speakers: These use Roku-specific pairing and require a compatible Roku host.

Roku streaming players are designed to work with televisions that have HDMI, while Wireless Speakers require a compatible Roku TV or Roku audio host. See Roku’s TV requirements and Wireless Speaker compatibility.

Choose the connection that matches your equipment

Setup Preferred connection Important limitation
Roku TV and modern soundbar or receiver HDMI ARC/eARC Both devices must have ARC/eARC ports.
Roku TV and older soundbar Optical/TOSLINK CEC volume integration and format support are more limited.
Roku TV and powered speakers Optical with a suitable DAC, or an available analog/headphone output Powered speakers need the right line-level signal.
Standalone Roku player and TV with ARC Player to any TV HDMI input; soundbar to the TV’s ARC/eARC port The TV returns Roku audio to the soundbar.
Standalone Roku player and TV with optical output Player to TV HDMI; soundbar or receiver to TV optical Set the TV and audio system to the optical input.
TV with only analog output 3.5-mm or RCA connection, if the TV and speakers support it Usually stereo; passive speakers still need an amplifier.
Compatible Roku host and Roku Wireless Speakers Roku wireless pairing Not compatible with ordinary Roku players or unrelated TVs.
Any Roku and arbitrary Bluetooth speaker Usually unsupported as a native TV-audio path Check the TV’s Bluetooth-output documentation or use a transmitter workaround.

HDMI ARC/eARC: the best general-purpose setup

ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends audio from the TV to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI. eARC is the higher-bandwidth version. HDMI-CEC can also let a compatible TV remote control volume. The TV, audio device, cable, and selected format all affect what is available; eARC does not automatically provide every advanced format.

Use the correctly labeled ports

Connect the cable from the TV socket marked HDMI ARC, ARC, HDMI eARC, or eARC to the soundbar or receiver socket with the same marking. A regular HDMI input may carry video but cannot return TV audio. Roku explains ARC and CEC settings at Configure HDMI settings on your TV.

  • Place it anywhere: Plug in your Roku TV Wireless Soundbar, then place it below your TV or wall mount it for your desired setup

Exact setup steps

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar or receiver.
  2. Connect HDMI from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the audio device’s ARC/eARC port.
  3. Turn on both devices and select the soundbar’s HDMI/TV ARC input if it does not switch automatically.
  4. In the TV settings, enable ARC and HDMI-CEC when required.
  5. Set audio output to the external device if the TV does not select it automatically.
  6. Play a Roku app or live-TV source and test volume from the TV or Roku remote.

CEC names differ by brand: LG calls it SIMPLINK; Samsung, Anynet+; Sony, BRAVIA Sync; Vizio, CEC; Panasonic, HDAVI Control/EZ Sync/VIERA Link; Philips, EasyLink; Toshiba, CE-Link/Regza Link; and Sharp, AQUOS Link. Exact menus vary by model and software.

A Roku TV Ready soundbar may launch an on-screen setup after the ARC/eARC connection is made. Its wiring procedure is documented at Roku TV Ready soundbar setup.

Optical audio: the reliable fallback

Optical is useful when the TV has a Digital Audio Out but no ARC, when HDMI handshaking is troublesome, or when the soundbar lacks ARC. It carries digital audio, but generally provides fewer control features and less format bandwidth than eARC.

  2. Select Optical, Digital, or TV input on the audio system.
  3. Set the television’s audio output to optical/external audio.
  4. If there is silence, temporarily choose PCM (or another format listed as supported by the soundbar).

Standalone Roku player: two wiring patterns

Player to TV, TV to soundbar

  1. Plug the Roku player into any ordinary HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
  3. Enable ARC/CEC and select the external audio output.

This is usually simplest when the TV supports ARC because the TV can send audio from Roku apps, its tuner, and other devices attached to the TV.

Player to receiver or soundbar, then to TV

  1. Connect the Roku player to an HDMI input on the receiver or soundbar.
  2. Connect the receiver or soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV.
  3. Select the correct input on the receiver or soundbar.

This centralizes sources, but the receiver or soundbar must pass through the video features you need, such as 4K, HDR, or gaming signals.

Roku Wireless Speakers: supported pairing only

Roku Wireless Speakers require a Roku TV, Roku Streambar, Streambar Pro, or Roku Smart Soundbar. They do not work with ordinary Roku streaming players, non-Roku TVs, or unrelated sound systems. A Roku TV supports up to two compatible speakers; a Streambar, Streambar Pro, or Smart Soundbar supports up to four. With a Roku TV they operate as stereo speakers; with compatible soundbars they serve as surround channels. Roku cites up to 30 feet under good wireless conditions, but walls and interference affect range.

Pair them

  1. Plug each speaker into power and ensure the Roku host is on and online.
  2. Hold the Roku remote’s Home button for five seconds and choose Wireless speakers, or go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Set up a new device > Wireless speakers.
  3. Follow the spoken and on-screen prompts and assign left, right, or surround positions.

When paired directly to a Roku TV, the TV’s built-in speakers are disabled. Wireless Speakers can receive Bluetooth music from a phone, tablet, or computer, but that Bluetooth feature does not make arbitrary Roku devices compatible with arbitrary Bluetooth speakers. Details are in Roku’s pairing instructions and product information.

Roku TV Ready soundbar

This is a certified third-party soundbar that integrates with a Roku TV through HDMI ARC/eARC. Look for the Roku TV Ready logo on the packaging or verify certification on the manufacturer’s product page. It still requires the correctly labeled ARC/eARC ports.

What about ordinary Bluetooth speakers?

Do not assume a Roku TV or Roku player can send television audio to any Bluetooth speaker. First check the exact TV model’s manual for Bluetooth-audio output. If the TV lacks it, a Bluetooth transmitter connected to optical or analog output can be a workaround, but possible lip-sync delay, codec limits, pairing instability, and loss of remote-volume control make it less predictable than ARC or optical.

Fix missing sound in order

HDMI has no audio

  1. Verify both ends are in ARC/eARC-labeled ports.
  2. Select the soundbar’s TV/HDMI ARC input.
  3. Enable ARC and CEC and select external audio output.
  4. Power off both devices, unplug briefly, reconnect, and restart.
  5. Try another suitable HDMI cable.
  6. If an older soundbar is connected to an eARC TV, turn off eARC or select standard ARC when available.
  7. Set the TV’s digital format to PCM as a compatibility test.

Optical is connected but silent

  • Choose Optical/Digital on the soundbar.
  • Choose Optical/Digital Audio Out on the TV.
  • Remove protective caps and fully seat the cable.
  • Confirm the soundbar supports the selected format; test PCM.
  • Make sure the TV is not still set to internal speakers.

Wireless Speakers are not found

  1. Open Settings > Remotes & devices > Set up a new device > Wireless speakers.
  2. Restart the Roku device.
  3. Turn it off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
  4. Press the speaker’s Restart button if needed.
  5. If the TV uses Ethernet and pairing fails, temporarily disconnect Ethernet, pair over Wi-Fi, then reconnect Ethernet.

See Roku’s recovery guidance at Wireless Speaker setup.

The TV speakers stopped working

This can be expected after selecting Wireless Speakers. To change outputs, use Home > Settings > Audio > Audio output and choose TV speakers, ARC, Optical, or Wireless speakers as available. Roku documents switching systems at Switch audio to another sound system. Labels vary by Roku OS version and model.

Buying and compatibility checklist

  • Confirm whether the TV has ARC/eARC, optical, analog, or headphone output.
  • Match the soundbar or receiver’s input to that output.
  • For passive speakers, budget for an amplifier or AV receiver; powered speakers contain amplification but still need a compatible signal.
  • Verify that a receiver passes through your required resolution, HDR, and gaming formats.
  • Buy Roku Wireless Speakers only for a listed Roku host.
  • Do not buy a new HDMI cable expecting it to create ARC support on hardware that lacks ARC.

For reference, Roku listed Wireless Speakers at $149.99 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable at $9.99 on its U.S. site when checked August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change. See Roku accessories.
