Unicode 17.0 was announced on September 9, 2025, so its “coming this fall” launch is now in the past. The release added eight emoji characters. A July preview had included Apple Core, but it was postponed and is not part of Unicode 17.0. Unicode 18.0 was announced on September 16, 2026, making 17.0 a historical release rather than the latest standard.
Which emoji did Unicode 17.0 add?
The Unicode Consortium’s final Emoji Recently Added, v17.0 chart is the reference for the official names, sequences, and variants. The newly encoded base emoji characters include:
- Distorted Face
- Fight Cloud
- Hairy Creature
- Trombone
- Treasure Chest
- Orca
- Landslide
The release also adds a Ballet Dancer sequence. The chart includes people-with-bunny-ears sequences and associated variants as well. Consult the chart for the exact sequences and variations; a chart entry is not necessarily a newly encoded character.
Why are different counts reported?
Unicode’s September 9, 2025 Unicode 17.0 Release Announcement says the release added eight new emoji characters. That figure counts characters, not every sequence or variant listed in the emoji chart. The chart’s category and variant counts total 163 entries, which is likewise not a count of new emoji characters.

The release added 4,803 characters across Unicode as a whole, bringing the standard to 159,801 encoded characters in total. Those figures cover the entire standard, not emoji alone. The Consortium describes Unicode as “the foundation for all global digital communications, providing the encoding for text content used in all devices.”
Was Apple Core included?
No. Apple Core appeared among nine prospective items in a July 2025 preview, alongside Trombone, Treasure Chest, Distorted Face, Hairy Creature, Fight Cloud, Orca, Ballet Dancer, and Landslide. The preview said proposed additions were subject to final approval. At its July 2025 meeting, the Unicode Technical Committee postponed Apple Core to Unicode 18.0; it is not a Unicode 17.0 emoji.

Does Unicode 17.0 mean the emoji appeared on every keyboard?
No. Unicode standardization defines characters and sequences so text can be encoded and exchanged; publication does not establish when a particular operating system, device, or app implements them. Unicode’s Emoji technical standard covers emoji characters, sequences, properties, and interoperability guidance. The v17.0 chart also cautions that platform images may be development versions. The cited Unicode materials do not establish current rollout dates for individual platforms, so availability must be checked with the relevant device or app provider.

Unicode 18.0 was announced on September 16, 2026. That makes Unicode 17.0 a completed release, not the upcoming fall launch implied by the original headline. The versioned emoji chart remains the precise reference for what 17.0 added.
