Under the Bridge is Hulu’s eight-episode limited series about the 1997 killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk. Adapted from Rebecca Godfrey’s nonfiction book, it deliberately combines real people with fictionalized and composite characters. The clearest example is Cam Bentland, played by Lily Gladstone: Cam is a largely fictionalized/composite investigator, not a one-to-one historical detective.
Under the Bridge is Hulu’s eight-episode limited series about the 1997 killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk in British Columbia. It is adapted from Rebecca Godfrey’s nonfiction book, but it is not a literal reenactment of the court record. The cast combines real people portrayed in dramatized form, series characters based partly on real figures, and fictional or composite creations.
The most important distinction is Lily Gladstone’s Cam Bentland: Cam is a largely fictionalized/composite police investigator created for the drama, not a single historical detective. By contrast, Rebecca Godfrey, Reena Virk, Suman Virk, Manjit Virk, Warren Glowatski, and Kelly Ellard are real people connected to the book or the criminal case—although the series’ dialogue, private conversations, motives, and scene construction remain dramatized.

Who is Rebecca Godfrey in Under the Bridge?
Riley Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, the real author whose nonfiction book Under the Bridge investigates Reena Virk’s death, the teenagers accused of involvement, and the investigation and trials that followed. Simon & Schuster describes the book as crime reportage and identifies the edition by ISBN 9781982123185.

Godfrey is one of the series’ principal viewpoints. Her presence means that the show is not only a police investigation: it also examines reporting, interpretation, memory, and the hidden social world surrounding the teenagers. Keough is therefore portraying a real writer, but viewers should not assume that every conversation, interview, emotional reaction, or investigative scene involving the character is documented history.
A useful rule is to read Godfrey’s scenes as the series’ dramatized interpretation of a nonfiction author at work—not as a verbatim account of what Godfrey said or did.
Who is Cam Bentland?
Lily Gladstone plays Cam Bentland, one of the few women of color on the Victoria police force in the series. Hulu’s character material gives Cam a personal and professional arc involving institutional loyalty, queer identity, and growing doubts about whether the justice system serves people like her.
Cam Bentland is largely fictionalized and composite. Adaptation reporting describes the character as an amalgamation of real-life figures connected to the case. She should not be listed as though she were a single, verifiable historical investigator.
This distinction matters because Cam is often the character viewers may instinctively treat as a documentary-style guide to the investigation. She is instead a dramatic construction designed to give the series a police perspective and to explore institutions, identity, and the limits of official justice. The series depicts Cam’s experiences; those experiences should not automatically be attributed to a specific real officer.
Who is Reena Virk?
Vritika Gupta plays Reena Virk, the real teenager at the center of the story. Reena was 14 when she was killed in British Columbia in 1997.
Hulu’s character description presents the dramatized Reena as self-conscious but bold, searching for belonging, and trying to move beyond the restrictions of a strict Jehovah’s Witness household. It also places emphasis on the Seven Oaks youth-home setting and Reena’s wish to be accepted by the girls she hopes to call friends.
Those details describe the show’s characterization and narrative framing. They should not be confused with independently verified facts about Reena’s interior life. The legal record establishes the circumstances of the assault and murder; a television drama necessarily fills in private motivations, relationships, and conversations in ways that may not be recoverable from the historical record.

Reena should remain the starting point for understanding the cast. She is not merely the event around which the other characters’ stories revolve: she was a real child whose death was the subject of the investigation and prosecutions.
The Virk family: Suman and Manjit
Archie Panjabi plays Suman Virk, Reena’s mother, and Ezra Faroque Khan plays Manjit Virk, her father. Both are real people portrayed in dramatized form.
The family storyline broadens the series beyond the teenagers’ social circle and the police investigation. It shows the case through the experience of Reena’s parents as well as through the institutions and young people surrounding the killing.
Family scenes should still be treated carefully. Unless a particular exchange is supported by a reliable independent source, it is more accurate to say that the series depicts a family dynamic than to present the dialogue or emotional behavior as a verified account of the real Virk family.
Warren Glowatski and Kelly Ellard
Javon “Wanna” Walton as Warren Glowatski
Javon “Wanna” Walton plays Warren Glowatski, a real defendant in the murder prosecution. In the series, Hulu’s character material presents Warren as quiet and seemingly gentle while also associating him with the Crips and anger connected to parental abandonment. Those are elements of the dramatized characterization, not a substitute for the legal record or a complete biography.
The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision identifies Glowatski as one of the two central defendants in the murder prosecution and records that he was convicted. The Crown also relied significantly on his testimony about Kelly Ellard’s role in the final assault. The court record is the appropriate source for the procedural and legal history; the show supplies an interpreted dramatic portrait.
Izzy G. as Kelly, the series’ Kelly Ellard counterpart
Izzy G. plays Kelly, the series counterpart to Kelly Ellard. Hulu describes Kelly as Josephine’s best friend and a founding member of the CMC within the show.
Ellard is a real person in the legal record. The Supreme Court of Canada records that her second-degree murder conviction from her third trial was ultimately restored in 2009 after an appeal concerning the treatment of witness evidence. That legal outcome should be kept separate from the series’ dialogue, psychology, and scene construction.

The series’ Kelly is based on Kelly Ellard, but the character is not a transcript of the court proceedings. When discussing what happened, distinguish between what the court established and what the drama depicts.
Josephine, Dusty, Samara, and the Seven Oaks group
Chloe Guidry as Josephine Bell
Chloe Guidry plays Josephine Bell, described in the series’ cast coverage as the queen bee of the Victoria group. Josephine alternately befriends and bullies Reena and leads the “mean girls” circle in the drama.
Josephine Bell is a series-specific, fictionalized or renamed character. Do not assume that her name, personality, relationships, or every action maps one-to-one onto a particular real participant unless a source explicitly establishes that connection.
Aiyana Goodfellow as Dusty
Aiyana Goodfellow plays Dusty, a member of the Seven Oaks group. The series presents Dusty as comparatively genuine toward Reena and as having a more sincere friendship with her than some of the other teenagers.
That is the role’s dramatic function. The available cast material does not justify treating Dusty as a directly identified historical person or assigning every aspect of the character to one real individual.
Isabella Leon as Samara
Isabella Leon plays Samara, another member of Josephine’s circle in the series. Samara is a series character, and the available reporting does not establish a sufficiently precise one-to-one real-life counterpart to identify her as a particular participant in the historical case.
How the group is presented
Kelly, Samara, and Warren G. are presented within Josephine’s circle. TheWrap’s description places Samara and Warren G. among Jo’s group and frames their possible involvement in Reena’s disappearance as part of the show’s suspense. That framing belongs to the drama. It should not be used to imply that every renamed character corresponds neatly to one person in the real-world group or that an on-screen suggestion is a court-established fact.
Roy Bentland, Scott Bentland, and Raj
Matt Craven plays Roy Bentland, Cam’s father and the Victoria police chief in the series. Daniel Diemer plays Scott Bentland, Roy’s son and Cam’s brother. Both are fictional family and police characters created for the drama.

Anoop Desai plays Raj, identified in the series as Reena’s uncle. Raj is a series character. These roles help the show build family and institutional relationships around its central viewpoints, but they should not be mistaken for documented historical participants without stronger evidence.
What happened to Reena Virk in real life?
The Supreme Court of Canada records that on November 14, 1997, teenagers gathered near the southern end of Craigflower Bridge in Victoria, British Columbia. After an argument, Reena was swarmed, punched, kicked, and burned with a cigarette.
The court states that Reena then made her way toward the northern side of the bridge, where she was attacked again and forcibly drowned in the Gorge Waterway.
The legal proceedings had more than one stage. Six participants in the initial assault were prosecuted in youth court in what became known as the “Shoreline Six” case. Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski were the central defendants in the murder prosecution. Glowatski was convicted. Ellard’s second-degree murder conviction from her third trial was ultimately restored by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2009.

The court decision also discusses inconsistencies in witness testimony and an appellate issue involving prior consistent statements. For that reason, a careful summary should avoid turning disputed witness details into uncomplicated fact or repeating sensational claims that go beyond the court’s findings.
How accurate is Under the Bridge?
The series has a direct source relationship: Hulu identifies it as an adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s book, and the publisher presents the book as an account of the Virk case and its trials. But “based on” does not mean that every character and scene is historically literal.
The adaptation uses three overlapping categories:
- Real people portrayed in dramatized form: Reena Virk, Rebecca Godfrey, Suman Virk, Manjit Virk, Warren Glowatski, and Kelly Ellard.
- Characters based on real people or events but shaped for television: Kelly is the series counterpart to Kelly Ellard, while the show’s treatment of real defendants and family members includes invented dialogue and interpreted psychology.
- Fictionalized or composite characters: Cam Bentland is the clearest example; Josephine Bell, Samara, Dusty, Raj, Roy Bentland, and Scott Bentland should also be treated as series characters rather than automatically assigned precise historical identities.
The safest language is specific: say “the court records,” “the publisher describes,” “Hulu’s bio presents,” or “the series depicts.” Avoid blending a character’s television backstory with the documented biography of the person who may have inspired it.
