UNBOWED is a feature-length documentary about Dr. Omar Bah, the Gambian refugee who founded Providence’s Refugee Dream Center. It follows Bah through a pivotal year, bringing his family life and community work into the same frame as his experience of displacement and his efforts to support newly arrived refugees.
What is UNBOWED about?
The film centers on Bah as a refugee, former journalist, advocate, and community leader. The Center for Independent Documentary describes it as an observational portrait of a pivotal year in his life, following how he works with refugees while leading the organization he founded. The Center for Independent Documentary’s film page also frames the story as an intimate look at resettlement beyond narratives focused only on hardship or exceptional business success.

That approach places Bah’s personal experience alongside the everyday work of building support for others. His family life is part of the portrait, as is the Refugee Dream Center’s role in helping people navigate life after arrival. The film is not a general account of refugee policy; its focus is one founder, his community, and an organization shaped by his experience.
How did Omar Bah’s experience shape the Refugee Dream Center?
PBS identifies Bah as a refugee from The Gambia, a former journalist, and a survivor of torture. In a PBS interview accompanying the documentary, he describes wanting to speak against injustice and corruption. He connects the Center’s name and purpose to the idea of helping refugees pursue the American Dream: “I said, ‘oh, let’s do that for refugees, to live the American dream. And that’s how the dream became the central part of the Refugee Dream Center.’”

A Rhode Island PBS profile published October 20, 2021 says Bah fled The Gambia after being declared wanted over articles criticizing the country’s then-dictator, and that his experience informed his decision to create post-resettlement support in Providence.
What does the Refugee Dream Center do?
The organization describes itself as a community created by refugees for refugees, intended to build a sense of family for people separated from loved ones. Its About Us page says a majority of its staff are refugees and lists support in several parts of post-arrival life:
