Spoilers for Netflix’s 2024 film Uglies. Tally returns to New Pretty Town and agrees to become Pretty, but she is not abandoning the Smokies or accepting the system. She is protecting Shay from being forced into the cure test and giving the rebels a chance to reach her after the operation. The film ends with Tally transformed but still bearing the scar on her palm. That ending leaves room for another story, but it does not confirm a sequel.
Why does Tally go back to New Pretty Town?
Tally’s return is a plan, not a change of heart. Earlier, she helps Dr. Cable find the Smokies, contributing to their capture. Once she understands the danger to her friends and what the Pretty operation does to people’s minds, she returns to Cable’s control on different terms: she will undergo the procedure so the Smokies can test their cure and find a way to reach her afterward.
Shay is at risk of becoming an unwilling test subject. Tally accepts that risk for herself instead. Director McG described her decision as a sacrifice: “She makes the ultimate sacrifice in the end where she elects to become Pretty.” The choice matters because the society around Tally has tried to take choice away; she acts to give her friends and other people a chance to choose.
What happens in the final scene?
Tally says, “I’m Tally Youngblood. Make me Pretty,” echoing the ending of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel, on which the film is based. The movie then shows her after the operation, rather than ending with the request alone. The cure has not been shown to work: testing and the Smokies’ effort to get back to her remain ahead.

What does Tally’s palm scar mean?
The scar remains visible after the transformation. Netflix’s official feature identifies it as the mark that connected Tally to Peris and a reminder that she remains herself beneath the labels imposed by the city. In the story, it also gives the ending a possible signal of recognition for the Smokies. It is not evidence that the cure has already succeeded.
Will there be a sequel to Uglies?
A sequel is possible, but the available reporting does not establish that Netflix approved one. In a September 20, 2024 report, TheWrap reported that director McG had sequel plans and was willing to continue if Netflix chose to make another film. That describes creative interest, not a greenlight or a production announcement.

The film adapts Westerfeld’s 2005 novel, and his official biography describes Uglies as part of a book series, so there is more source material available. That does not guarantee another film, and an adaptation could change what happens in the books. As of October 4, 2026, the sources available for this article do not establish an official Netflix approval or announced production. That status can change.

Tally’s decision reverses the logic of a society that sorts people into “Uglies” and “Pretties” and treats the operation as compulsory. She risks being changed so her friends can expose a cure and offer people a choice. Joey King, who plays Tally, captures that rejection of imposed categories: “We’re not Uglies. We’re not Pretties. We’re just people.”
