A user-generated content (UGC) business creates videos, photos, reviews, or other assets that a brand can publish on its own channels or use in advertising. Unlike an influencer deal, the work does not necessarily depend on you publishing to your own followers. To get started, choose a format and niche, make a small portfolio, define your deliverables, approach suitable brands, and put the scope, payment, and usage rights in writing.
What a UGC business does—and what it does not have to be
UGC creators produce content for a brand’s use. A business might hire you to make a product demonstration, a testimonial-style video, or a set of photos, then publish that material on its own account or use it in an ad. Your portfolio, ability to make useful content, and fit for the brief can matter more than your follower count when the brand is buying production rather than access to your audience.
That is different from sponsored creator posting: the creator publishes an endorsement to an audience they control. Some arrangements combine both services, so confirm whether you are being paid to make content, publish it, grant advertising permission, or do all three. TikTok’s commercial UGC resource identifies branded content and Spark Ads as formats, and describes creators granting advertising authorization; it does not establish standard prices or deal terms. | Deal type | What you provide | Questions to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Production-only UGC | Content delivered for a brand to use; you may not post it yourself. | What assets, formats, edits, and usage permission are included? |
| Sponsored creator posting | A post or endorsement published to an account you control. | Which account and platform, when it posts, and what disclosure is required? |
| Paid-ad use | Permission for the brand to use creator content in paid advertising; some formats may involve authorization through a creator account. | Which platforms, how long, whether your account or identity is used, and whether exclusivity applies? |
How to start a UGC business
1. Pick a format and a credible niche
Start with work you can make consistently: for example, product demonstrations, short explainers, unboxings, or lifestyle clips. A niche can help a brand understand what kinds of briefs suit you, but do not claim expertise or product experience you do not have. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says endorsements should be truthful and not misleading, and endorsers should not describe experience with products they have not tried. Its guidance is not itself a regulation; the FTC says failure to follow it may prompt investigation under the FTC Act. FTC: Endorsements, Influencers, and Reviews.
2. Make a small portfolio of sample work
Create a few examples that show the formats you want to sell. You can use products you own, but make clear that a sample is self-initiated and not a paid brand partnership. Show the finished asset and, where useful, a short note about the intended format or deliverable. Do not imply that a company commissioned or endorsed a sample when it did not.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Describe the deliverable, not just “a video”
Make each offer understandable before a brand agrees. Specify the number and type of assets, approximate length or format if relevant, whether captions or alternate versions are included, delivery format, deadline, and how many revision rounds are included. State separately whether you will post from a personal account or grant paid-ad use. These are planning recommendations, not a legally required contract form.
4. Find brands that fit your work
Approach brands whose products and audience align with your examples. A concise pitch can link your portfolio, identify the kind of asset you can make, and ask what deliverable and usage scope the brand needs. Do not promise reach or sales results you cannot substantiate. Keep a record of pitches, responses, agreed work, invoices, and payments.
5. Confirm the terms before production
Put the agreed scope in writing before you film. A written record helps both sides distinguish production from posting and organic use from paid advertising. It does not replace jurisdiction-specific legal advice, and no universal UGC contract form is established here.

What should a UGC agreement cover?
- Deliverables: number, type, format, versions, and any raw footage or project files.
- Schedule: brief approval, draft and final deadlines, and when the brand must provide products or information.
- Revisions: included rounds and how changes beyond the agreed scope will be handled.
- Payment: amount, invoice process, due date, and what happens if a project is cancelled or delayed.
- Usage permission: organic channels, paid-ad platforms, duration, territory if relevant, and whether the brand may edit or adapt the work.
- Authorization and identity: whether an ad will run through your account or use your name, image, or handle; specify duration and platform permissions.
- Exclusivity: any restriction on working with competitors, its category, and how long it lasts.
- Posting and disclosure: whether you must publish anything yourself and who is responsible for platform-specific setup and clear endorsement disclosures.
- Cancellation and approval: what happens to payment and usage rights if either side stops work, and who approves the final material.
Rights clauses can have legal consequences, and their treatment varies by jurisdiction. If the proposed terms grant broad, long-lasting, or exclusive rights, consider getting advice suited to your location and the deal.
Disclosures and platform rules
Disclose material connections clearly
Payment, free or discounted products, and other perks can create a material connection that should be disclosed when you endorse a brand. The FTC advises placing the disclosure with the endorsement where it is hard to miss—not only in a profile, behind a “more” link, or among hashtags. Its exact advice is: “One key is to make a good disclosure of your relationship to the brand.” Read the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers.
A production-only asset may be published by the brand without you posting it, but do not assume that removes disclosure obligations from an endorsement or from any post you do make. Clarify who will publish the content and how a material connection will be made clear to the audience.

Use TikTok’s commercial content disclosure setting when applicable
TikTok says creators must turn on its content disclosure setting when a post promotes a brand, product, or service, including promotion of their own business. It warns that content may be removed or restricted if the disclosure is missing. Check TikTok’s current guidance on promoting a brand, product, or service before publishing; platform controls and authorization durations can change.
How to price UGC work without guessing at a market rate
There is no authoritative, representative rate benchmark established here, so a single “standard UGC rate” would be misleading. Individual online deal anecdotes are not a reliable basis for typical earnings or a universal price list. Build a quote from the specific scope instead:
- List the finished assets, versions, and any raw footage requested.
- Estimate the time and costs for planning, production, editing, revisions, and delivery.
- Define the requested permission: organic reposting or paid ads, channels, duration, and exclusivity.
- State posting obligations separately from content production and paid-media rights.
- Set the payment amount and timing in writing, then check that the work fits your capacity and costs.
This is a quoting worksheet, not a market-rate claim. Do not treat a broad or perpetual paid-ad license as equivalent to a limited organic repost permission without considering its scope.

Tax and recordkeeping for a U.S. creator
This section covers U.S. federal guidance only. The IRS treats creative or professional services as gig work and says gig income must be reported even when the work is part-time or temporary, or when you do not receive an information return. Its gig-work guidance says net self-employment earnings of $400 or more require filing a return for gig work. Keep records of income and receipts for expenses; certain independent contractors may also need to make estimated tax payments. See the IRS guide to managing taxes for gig work.
The IRS describes self-employment tax as Social Security and Medicare taxes. Its Topic 554 lists rates of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, while noting an annual Social Security wage base and possible additional Medicare tax. Those rates alone do not calculate your complete tax bill, and tax rules can change. Check IRS Topic 554 and consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. State and local obligations depend on where you live and work; creators outside the United States need guidance for their own jurisdiction.
Optional business tools and services
Keep startup spending tied to actual work. For video, a smartphone tripod can be an optional way to stabilize a phone while filming; this does not mean every creator needs to buy one. Other tools and services should solve a specific production or workflow problem rather than be treated as prerequisites.

If your portfolio work includes software or media brands, one possible subject is StreamNeo, a cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. That is a potential content brief, not a requirement for running a UGC business; its service is for uploaded-video YouTube streams, not camera-based live production. A creator interested in trying it can visit StreamNeo registration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pitching a follower count when the brand is asking for production—or promising reach when you are not selling a creator-posted placement.
- Leaving paid-ad permissions, duration, or exclusivity vague.
- Agreeing to unlimited revisions or unspecified raw-footage delivery without defining the scope.
- Using testimonial language about a product you have not tried, or hiding a material connection from viewers.
- Assuming one platform’s disclosure controls satisfy every legal or platform obligation.
- Planning income around unverified rate-card claims or anecdotes instead of the actual deliverables and rights in each deal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a registered company or business license to start?
Requirements depend on where you live and how you operate; the cited U.S. tax guidance does not establish a universal registration or licensing rule. Check local requirements before taking paid work.
Can I use a brand’s logo or product in my portfolio sample?
The sources here do not settle permission for particular portfolio uses. Avoid implying a brand commissioned or endorsed a sample, and seek permission when your intended use could create confusion or raise rights concerns.
