Peter Steele, the singer and bassist who fronted Type O Negative, died on April 14, 2010, at age 48. At the time, his manager and bandmates described heart failure as the apparent cause, but the band said the official cause was still pending autopsy results.
What was reported about Peter Steele’s death?
Type O Negative’s surviving members—Josh Silver, Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly—issued a statement reproduced by The Georgia Straight on April 16, 2010. It said Steele had died “of what appears to be heart failure,” while adding that “the official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results.”
In a report published April 15, 2010, CBS News quoted manager Mike Renault saying, “As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.” These were preliminary accounts, not a confirmed medical finding. The available reporting does not establish a final cause of death.
Who was Peter Steele?
Peter Steele was the stage name of Peter, also known as Petrus T. Ratajczyk, a Brooklyn-born musician who sang and played bass for Type O Negative. Before joining the band, he played in Fallout and Carnivore, according to CBS News.

What music is he remembered for?
Type O Negative built a following through albums including Bloody Kisses and October Rust. A 2026 retrospective on Louder revisits the latter album and the band’s earlier breakthrough. Steele’s death brought the band’s story to an end.
