The two fantasy series in the May 14, 2024, trailer story were House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Both previews were for season two: one pointed toward a Targaryen civil war, while the other teased Sauron’s return and the making of more Rings.
What were the two fantasy shows?
Andy Meek’s May 14, 2024, report for BGR covered new season-two trailers for HBO’s House of the Dragon and Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The shows belong to different fantasy worlds and timelines: House of the Dragon adapts George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history of House Targaryen, while The Rings of Power is set in Tolkien’s Second Age.
The report’s season premiere dates—June 16, 2024, for House of the Dragon and August 29, 2024, for The Rings of Power—were upcoming dates when it was published. They are historical dates, not current schedules. The report does not establish either show’s present-day availability or regional streaming catalog. Read the May 14, 2024, BGR report.
What did the House of the Dragon trailer preview?
The second season picks up after Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar, attacks Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax. The preview set up the escalation of the Targaryen conflict toward open war, continuing the family history dramatized in Fire & Blood.

The season’s returning cast included Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans. The report listed new cast members Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor and Vincent Regan.
What did The Rings of Power trailer tease?
The preview emphasized Charlie Vickers returning as Sauron and the story’s Second Age setting. It also brought attention to Galadriel, Prince Durin IV, Arondir and Celebrimbor, and teased the creation of more Rings. BGR described the trailer’s framing as a journey back to Tolkien’s Second Age and Sauron’s pursuit of power; those are promotional descriptions, not independently assessed claims about the season.
BGR reported that Amazon said the first season had drawn more than 100 million viewers worldwide. The same article relayed Amazon’s claim that the series generated more Prime sign-ups worldwide during its launch window than any previous content up to that point. These are company-attributed figures as reported by BGR, not independently verified audience measurements.

| Series | Fantasy timeline and source | Season-two focus in the preview |
|---|---|---|
| House of the Dragon | Westeros; based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood | The Targaryen conflict after the attack on Lucerys and Arrax, with war approaching |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power | Tolkien’s Second Age | Sauron’s return, familiar characters and the creation of more Rings |
In short, the 2024 previews offered two different kinds of looming upheaval: a dynastic struggle within House Targaryen and the growing threat associated with Sauron in Middle-earth.
